"The best friend of a nation is he who most faithfully rebukes her for her sins—and he her worst enemy who, under the specious… garb of patriotism seeks to excuse, palliate or defend them." - Frederick Douglass

His default mode is aggression. Especially with women.
Trump: We were in the midst of negotiating and a lot of stupid people said why aren’t you putting Russian sanctions—
Collins: But you said you didn’t give anything for his release
Trump: If I didn’t do that, you wouldn’t have him coming back.
Collins: So you did give something.
Trump: You don’t know anything. You’re fake news CNN.
Collins: You’re saying you lifted the sanctions in exchange for his release?
Trump: You don’t know what you’re talking about. You’re a low IQ person. You’re a dummy.

Last week was another busy one in Chicago for the Council. While part of our team was in Poland for the Warsaw Security Forum, colleagues here in Chicago brought members and experts together for conversations spanning US-China relations, food insecurity, national security, and more.
A few highlights from the week’s programming:
Roundtable with Congressman Jason Crow (@RepJasonCrow) on the Use of Force: Congressman Crow joined Council Senior Advisor to the CEO Eric Pierce to discuss national security and the use of force.
Abiding Hunger: Why Food Insecurity Persists in America: Devita Davison, Amy Laboy, @RogerThurow, and Catherine Bertini (@C_A_Bertini) examined why food insecurity persists despite America’s extraordinary abundance and what can be done to expand reliable access to food.
Roundtable with Jonathan Cheng (@JChengWSJ): The @WSJ’s China Bureau Chief joined Council members for a private discussion on US-China relations and his experiences as a journalist in Asia.
Emerging Leaders Session with Congressman Sean Casten (@RepCasten): The Class of 2026 joined US Representative Casten for a discussion on economic uncertainty and the reshaping of the workforce.
Young Professionals Network Happy Hour: YP members gathered at @united headquarters for an evening of networking and connection.
The Council’s fall programming continues with a full slate of conversations on the issues shaping our world. Explore our upcoming events and join us for a discussion: bit.ly/4jsZGJz
We have to think about collapsing Trump poll numbers and Rs turning on him the same way we'd think about finally being able to corner a rabid raccoon in your garage. Good news: he's out of options. Bad news: he's a rabid raccoon.
😳 Trump loses it and SNAPS at a string of reporters, says Ilhan Omar might "go to jail," calls Somalia "a shit house," and boasts that thanks to a new program he announced today Americans "will make millions of dollars by turning others in" during absolutely deranged Oval Office event
Here's a supercut:
"We have a pro-democracy, reality-based majority, and a discrete radical minority [of] white Christian nationalists that holds views the rest of the country find abhorrent... the latter group dominates one major party." contrariannews.org/p/america…
This is all very consistent with @JaredHuffman's recent in-depth analysis in No Prophets - worth reading. wwnorton.com/books/no-prophe…
Kiley is not an independent and he's not going to win his election. But kudos to his comms team for placing this story.

Eric Pratt, the republican running for Angie Craig's open seat in MN-02, left the AI restating his prompt on his website.
"The President is not popular, so all messaging should be focused on local politics and needs."

I recently visited Ignite Graphics Group, a woman-owned small business in Elmhurst. We discussed challenges from COVID-era supply chain shortages, COVID Economic Injury Disaster Loans, and how small businesses have worked to recover in the last few years.
This is of course true. Which is why all of us should not only call it out but also call Donald Trump for being the one using the term. The guy who has previously said he only wants "short guys that wear yarmulkes" counting his money. To give him a pass is to normalize hatred.
The term “Shylock” is rooted in a longstanding antisemitic stereotype. Regardless of intent, its use can reinforce harmful tropes about Jews and normalize language that has long been used to target the Jewish community.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The term was used (for at least the second intent in as many years) by President Trump.

Important context to point out the user of the term regardless of intent.

I've long maintained that the Republican party won't heal until the rank and file denies any connection to the Trump brand and his grandchildren are embarrassed to bear his name. We ain't there yet... but this is what the start down that road looks like. nytimes.com/2026/10/19/us/po…
For no particular reason, here's a funny civics story. Last week, I stopped in to chat with students at LaGrange Highlands Middle school who were learning about the Constitution...
10. But it is charming and amusing to see these bunch of students from U Chicago who have decided to move the Onion Overton window with their (mass?) mobilization outside the CME this week. instagram.com/reel/Desd3z7Tu…
