🇨🇦 Canada’s Sunset Times Look a Little Different This Winter!
Earlier, we shared a look at today’s sunset times across Ontario. But when you look at the rest of Canada, you might notice some interesting differences this year!
Geography plays a part, but so do the different clock changes across the country…
Alberta, Manitoba, the Northwest Territories, most of B.C. and parts of Northwestern Ontario kept their clocks on summer time overnight. In areas that would normally have turned their clocks back, sunset will now be about an hour later on the clock than it would have been under the old winter schedule.
For today, Sunday, November 1, that puts sunset around 5:51 PM in Vancouver, 6:10 PM in Calgary, 6:01 PM in Edmonton and 6:05 PM in Winnipeg. In Northwestern Ontario, Kenora holds on until approximately 5:55 PM.
Meanwhile, most of Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada turned their clocks back overnight. Sunset is now around 5:08 PM in Toronto, 4:50 PM in Ottawa, 4:41 PM in Montreal, 5:03 PM in Halifax and 4:43 PM in St. John’s. All times on the map are local.
Here’s an interesting comparison: the sun will set almost an hour later on the clock in Winnipeg than in Toronto today! Under the previous winter clock schedule, those sunset times would have been just a few minutes apart.
Yukon and most of Saskatchewan were already keeping the same clock time year-round, so skipping the fall clock change is nothing new for them.
Of course, keeping summer time doesn’t create any extra daylight. The trade-off for those later sunsets is later sunrises, and some of Canada’s biggest cities will really notice the difference this winter!
On December 21, the shortest day of the year, the sun won’t rise until around 9:48 AM in Edmonton, 9:37 AM in Calgary, 9:24 AM in Winnipeg and 9:05 AM in Vancouver!
For comparison, sunrise in Toronto will be around 7:48 AM that same morning. Even though Toronto and Winnipeg now share the same clock time during the winter, Winnipeg will be waiting more than an hour and a half longer for the sun to rise!
Geography is part of that difference, but keeping summer time also means Winnipeg’s sunrise will be an hour later on the clock than it would have been under the old winter schedule.
The sky will begin to brighten before sunrise, but many people will still be starting their morning routines before the sun is up. And no matter what the clock says, daylight hours will continue to get shorter as we approach the winter solstice!
What time is the sun setting in your part of the country today? Let us know where you’re checking in from!

🕒 Canada’s Time Differences Are Getting a Shakeup This Winter!
Most of Ontario will turn the clocks back one hour tonight, but several provinces are keeping their summer clock time all year long. That means some familiar time differences across Canada are about to look a little different!
Starting Sunday, Toronto will be on the SAME time as Winnipeg, just ONE hour ahead of Calgary and Regina, and only TWO hours ahead of Vancouver.
That’s a big change from last winter, when Toronto was one hour ahead of Winnipeg, two hours ahead of Calgary and three hours ahead of Vancouver!
Parts of Northwestern Ontario are also saying goodbye to seasonal clock changes. Communities including Kenora, Dryden and Fort Frances will keep their current time and line up with the rest of Ontario throughout the winter.
Some communities, including Atikokan and Pickle Lake, have already been keeping the same clock time year-round.
So why is most of Ontario still changing its clocks? 🤔
Ontario passed legislation in 2020 to make daylight time permanent, but it hasn’t taken effect across the province. Ontario has emphasized the importance of coordinating a broader change with Quebec and New York.
Quebec has announced plans to end its clock changes, although it hasn’t yet decided whether to keep standard time or daylight time all year.
There’s also been some movement in the United States, where the House passed the Sunshine Protection Act in July. However, it still needs Senate approval and hasn’t become law.
Proposals in New York remain in committee, and current U.S. federal rules don’t allow states to independently stay on daylight time year-round. For now, there’s no confirmed change for New York and no automatic change coming for the rest of Ontario.
For those falling back tonight, sunrise and sunset will both happen roughly an hour earlier by the clock. That means brighter mornings, but darkness will arrive earlier in the evening. We aren’t actually losing an hour of daylight because of the clock change!
Meanwhile, places keeping their summer time will see later sunrises AND later sunsets compared to what they would have experienced if they had turned their clocks back.
Our map shows how the clocks will compare across Canada at the same moment after Sunday’s changes.
Would you rather keep standard time or daylight time all year?
