"Whether you’re a comic book nerd or a horror junkie, ‘Clayface’ is worth the price of admission for its genre-driven approach to a lesser-known character, hopefully serving as a roadmap for the DCU’s onscreen future." - Deadline’s Glenn Garner

Full review embargo has been lifted by #WB for #DCStudios’s #CLAYFACE , and most critics seem to have mostly enjoyed it, like early reactions suggested!
Still early days, but so far 77% out of 44 critics are siding with #DCU’s first body horror film, not as strong as fellow body horrors #TheSubstance’s 89%, & #Titane’s 90%, #TheThing’s 85%, but better than #Joker’s 68%, #Morbius’s 15% & a considerable improvement from DCU’s last entry #SUPERGIRL’s 52%, with critics saying that although the film isn’t perfect, it is a gruesome, uncompromising monster film which embraces the dark side of DC & a gamble that mostly pays off.
#CLAYFACE debuts this FRI at US #BoxOffice!

Clayface: The first DCU film to really set itself apart from being a traditional comic book movie. Watkins, Flanagan, and Amini break into telling a body horror story about identity with an outstanding performance from Tom Rhys Harries that elevates the material of the already complex Matt Hagen.

Wonder Woman can take on gods, monsters, and just about anything the universe throws at her. But one of her greatest strengths has always been her ability to see the humanity in people who have forgotten how to see it in themselves. Happy 85th anniversary, Diana. She made her first comic appearance in ALL-STAR COMICS #8, written by William Moulton Marston, with pencils and art by H.G. Peter. @DCWonderWoman @DCOfficial

#Clayface is not—I repeat *not*—DC’s Morbius. Quite the opposite. This is how you properly do villain to sympathetic antihero (think Doc Ock in Spider-Man 2). One of the most refreshing comic book movies in a long time and some brilliant use of the character’s shapeshifting that makes full use of the R-rating. Can’t wait to see what kind of big swings the DCU takes next!

#CLAYFACE is everything I wanted and more, watching this movie it's so clear as to why Tom Rhys was handpicked by both James Gunn and Matt Reeves because it's an unbelievable movie lead-role debut. This screenplay from Flanagan is clear cut one of the best origin's written in the genre, & the material driven from BTAS with the Cronenberg/Carpenter homages had me internally & externally say "what the fuck" in a way no other comic book film has ever done for me because it's grotesque, distorted and appalling..
This movie does justice to the tragic vanity & the essence of makes the character of Matt Hagen so compelling. Really reminded me of Colin Farrell with The Penguin, Rhys' charm is so contagious that I found myself immediately rooting for the character but as the film unfolds...yeah. The themes of performing/acting mirroring Hagen's actions afterwards are just chefs kiss & play off each other so well. This isn't a traditional scare-horror but there were a couple moments that got me, it shines brightest as a tension packed suspense that utilizesfast paced-cutting masterfully. Naomi Ackie was also a standout in this movie, and there were a handful of dry humor moments that hit home for me every time. (Felt like a Cregger balance)
The 2.76:1 Panavision aspect ratio was a creative choice that perfectly encapsulates the look they wanted, and the usage of the Ronin 4D on this one was noticed because DP Rob Hardy MOVED the soul out this camera, such an incredible technical choice to be able to capture both the frantic suspense and larger scale/chaotic sequence. James Price's set work on this really captures the muddy, and pessimistic void vibe of Gotham in a way that makes me even more excited for BATB. This film does NOT hold back, and rightfully earns that R-rating, with some of the most creative, and imaginative usage of abilities i've seen in a while.
My con's with this film mainly stem with me just wanted particular narrative threads (can't specify) being pulled down a bit more, but that's just because I was so immersed into it. Just an absolute home run from James Watkins and for the DCU, I can't wait to watch this one again and most all...shows how much the boundaries can and SHOULD be pushed in this genre. 8/10. 🫠

#ClayfaceMovie is a gloriously grotesque love letter to Batman’s weirdest corners. An unapologetically bizarre, deeply disturbing descent into a Gotham I never wanted to leave. It’s tragic, twisted and gloriously unhinged. I loved every disgusting second of it. @warnerbrosau

Watched Clayface (2026) at Vue's mystery horror screening last night.
Honestly, what a film! Dark, violent, visually striking and incredibly well paced. The slow transformation from a sympathetic character into something truly monstrous is brilliantly handled.
One of DC's best films in years.
5/5 ⭐

CLAYFACE IS INCREDIBLE. Had me looking away from the screen multiple times with how gross it got. Love that it’s a true VILLAIN origin story rather than trying to make clayface some kind of anti hero. Will be seeing a second time 🔥🔥 #Clayface #ClayfaceMovie

#Clayface is phenomenal!! An amazing self-contained story crafted beautifully to show the tragic downfall of Matt Hagen and the gruesome rise of CLAYFACE. A mini thread of my thoughts.
