Anglicanism: The English Church from the Beginning 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Anglicanism, though named after the Reformation, refers to a Church far older than the 16th century. The Church in England traces its foundations to the earliest centuries of the Christian era - possibly to the first century itself. Early tradition holds that Joseph of Arimathea and Aristobulus brought the Gospel to Britain, planting the faith long before Augustine arrived from Rome in 597 AD. This ancient Church, shaped by English soil and Englishmen, developed its own saints, customs, and liturgy. It was marked by reverence, orthodoxy, and independence. The Sarum Rite - the pre-Reformation liturgy of England - was one of the clearest expressions of this native tradition: dignified, scriptural, and distinctly English. Though the Synod of Whitby in 664 brought the English Church under closer Roman influence, it always retained its own character. The break with Rome in the 16th century was not the birth of the English Church, but a return to its older, original, native identity - scriptural, national, and free from papal supremacy. The Church of England remained apostolic in structure, retaining the historic episcopate and continuing the line of apostolic succession. Anglicanism stands on the three-legged stool of Scripture, Tradition, and Reason. It is not bound to one style: it includes the solemn high Mass with incense and vestments - often echoing the Sarum spirit - and the plain, pared-back worship of almost Puritan simplicity. Both are valid expressions, so long as they hold to the truth of the Gospel and the order of the Church. Today, much of Anglicanism has been distorted by cultural Marxism and modernist theology. But faithful parishes remain - where the Word is preached, the sacraments administered, and the ancient faith of the English Church continues. Traditional Anglicanism, (not the captured, woke version) is the inheritance of the English people. And it is worth preserving. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Christianity existed in Britain centuries before the Norman Conquest and long before there was a separate Roman Catholic Church as we know it today 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 The early British and Anglo-Saxon saints -Patrick, David, Columba, Aidan, Cuthbert and many others, belonged to the undivided orthodox Church of the first millennium. Their Christianity was sacramental, monastic, episcopal and rooted in the faith of the ancient Fathers. Britain later entered closer communion with Rome, especially after Augustine’s mission in 597, but the medieval system of strong papal jurisdiction had not yet developed. This is why Orthodox Christians often speak of early Britain as Orthodox. Orthodox Christianity in Britain came before medieval Roman Catholicism. It didn't take the English long to shake off the shackles of Rome and all its man made innovations and unbiblical additions. ☦️ 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

The Anglican Church is fully apostolic: rooted in the ancient Church, preserving the historic episcopate, the sacraments, the creeds and the faith handed down from the Apostles. It did not begin at the Reformation. Rome disagrees. But it doesn't matter what Rome says. Rome has zero authority in England since it went rogue 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Old High Church Anglicanism is distinctive because it presents the Church of England not as a compromise between Roman Catholicism and Protestantism, but as a reformed expression of the ancient Catholic Church. Its genius lies in holding together things that are often separated: the authority of Holy Scripture and the testimony of antiquity, Reformation doctrine and sacramental worship, episcopal government and evangelical faith, catholic continuity and freedom from papal jurisdiction. Its aim was not to create something new, but to preserve what was ancient while reforming what had become corrupt or unscriptural. This vision is embodied in the great Anglican divines—men such as Lancelot Andrewes, John Cosin, Jeremy Taylor, William Laud, George Hickes, and Thomas Ken—whose theology drew deeply from Scripture, the Fathers, the ancient councils, the creeds, and the liturgical inheritance of the Church. For them, the Church was not merely an invisible fellowship of individual believers, but a visible, historical, sacramental society, handed down through apostolic ministry and gathered around Word and Sacrament. Antiquity therefore served not as nostalgia but as a theological test: Anglicanism sought to measure both medieval developments and Protestant innovations against the faith and practice of the primitive Church. The Anglican formularies give this vision its authoritative shape: the Thirty-Nine Articles, the Book of Common Prayer, the Ordinal, and the Homilies. The Articles articulate the doctrinal settlement of the English Reformation; the Prayer Book embodies that faith in worship; the Ordinal expresses its understanding of the ministry and apostolic order; and the Homilies provide theological and pastoral exposition. Together they demonstrate a central Anglican conviction: doctrine is not merely something to be stated but something to be prayed, proclaimed, sacramentally enacted, and lived. The theology of the formularies is therefore inseparable from the worship of the Church. This is why old High Church Anglicanism cannot be adequately described simply as “a middle way.” Its claim is more substantial: the Church of England could be genuinely Reformed precisely because it remained genuinely catholic. It rejected doctrines and practices it judged contrary to Scripture while retaining the creeds, the episcopate, the sacraments, the liturgical year, the Eucharistic life of the Church, and the inheritance of the Fathers. It could therefore speak the language of the Reformation without abandoning the Church of the ages. The result is a tradition with a rare theological balance: Scriptural without being anti-traditional, Reformed without being radically Protestant, Catholic without being Roman, episcopal without being merely institutional, and liturgical without reducing Christianity to ceremony. Its deepest principle is continuity—continuity with Scripture, continuity with the primitive Church, continuity with the Fathers, continuity through the apostolic ministry, and continuity in the worship expressed through the Prayer Book. The uniqueness of old High Church Anglicanism ultimately lies in this synthesis: a Church reformed, yet not reinvented; Catholic, yet not Roman; Protestant in its doctrinal settlement, yet profoundly patristic and sacramental in its vision of the Church.

RZ not beating the liberal subversive charges...
To those frustrated with the PCA: Don't bother sticking with a denomination that was founding upon not sticking with the denomination. It's clear now that splitting from a denomination due to liberalism does not solve the problem, it just delays it for you and makes it 10x worse for the people you split from. It's time to abandon the failed experiment that is the PCA and come home to mother PCUSA, the church that helped build America.

I am not trying to make my Catholic friends, who I love, angry with this statement. But this entire episode is starting to explain to me why so many Americans were concerned about a Catholic president for so long. I have no interest in Rome trying to dictate American policy. And if it continues to loudly make its opinions heard on our foreign policy, I believe they’re going to find a lot of American Protestants feeling a lot less ecumenical than we have been in the more recent past.
