Space memes, fusion schemes, and x-fundie dreams Recurrent laryngeal nerve's #1 defender

I will tolerate recurrent laryngeal nerve slander no longer! It's actually the result of several elegant solutions to difficult problems in embryology, and the length is a non-issue. A 🧵 1/13
My meager education in biology and evolution gave me the mistaken impression that evolution optimized everything. But it didn't. One example is the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN). It goes from behind your ear, loops down below your aorta, and then back up to the voice-box 1/2

Imagine having to explain to the ER doc why you have Patrick Star protruding from your chest after the airbag launches him at you like a ninja star at Mach Jesus
Make the steering wheel more comfortable to drive!
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
This video shows a whimsical decorative craft project (with fur, beads, resin elements and a starfish) from viral DIY channels, misrepresented as a way to make a steering wheel more comfortable for driving. Such additions are unsafe and can interfere with airbag deployment. supercarblondie.com/sea-life-theme… nhtsa.gov/press-releases…

Almost all modifications besides the lengthing that have been discussed for Centaur V are things that also had to be changed on the Delta IV upper stage for ICPS. Was ICPS an entirely new stage? Is the LEO Centaur V an entirely new stage?
Replying to @SpaceKoala
the full extent of the required modifications to go from the 120K tank to 180K make it effectively a brand new stage as well EUS and ML2 would've been ready by the time landers are ready to support a crewed landing. the same is not the case of 180K and ML1 mods.

People out here acting like "just build an entirely new stage you can trust to send people to the freaking Moon first try make no mistakes" is anywhere near "modify an existing stage" on cost and schedule.
ULA and Jared are about to learn All of these

When you see a space colony with a bunch of grass and trees and stuff that's all life support margin stuff because if it's not food you gotta burn the grass clippings and fallen leaves to keep the nutrients and CO2 cycling anyways. More people show up? Just plant more crops.
The ISRU processes needed to make propellent will produce so much oxygen any breathing oxygen will be a rounding error. And that's before getting to the fact one of the most important ways to reduce import costs (growing food) also makes oxygen.

Man they're going after the wrong issue with smart TVs.
The Europoors are at it again. I can't believe that this government looks at the slowest growing continent on planet earth and thinks 'yes, let's be more like them'. Europe is a chronic disaster zone and we should largely be doing precisely the opposite of what it decrees - especially on energy and tech policy.

The amount of electricity it takes to produce enough oxygen (from water) that one person needs for a day is only like 5-10 kWh (just $1 of electricity). To scrub their CO2 takes even less. At large scale, life support is cheap, and large habitats provide immense buffer, as well.

The implication here is that in a world that valued people more than property they would consider killing people to be an acceptable form of protest.

What's funny about this complaint is you could buy a million pounds of Inconel for the cost of the two RL-10 engines you save on a single flight over EUS.
"SLS is too expensive. to remedy this we will place a Centaur made of a material 5-7x more expensive than stainless steel. Also add another ESM. Centaur V Fixes this"

To be more serious for a second, my FIL had the San Juan river flood his house yesterday. He does not have flood insurance. The only thing more expensive than insurance is not having it.

In the PNW the sawmill boats are designed to make you feel like you're piloting them drunk to keep the workers from being disoriented if they accidentally show up to work sober.
This boat is a “Log Bronc” and is used to move logs around in sawmill ponds 👀
