A telecom nerd's alter ego tracking @FCC proceedings. Spectrum policy is complicated. But calling out industry bulls**t isn't.

This week, we revived the FCC’s tradition of hosting a Halloween party, and we invited staff to bring their kids to work for a costume parade.
Great to spend time together and enjoy all the creativity. 👻🎃

NEWS: @SenateCommerce is highly likely to reschedule its postponed confirmation hearing for Republican @FCC nominee Danielle Thumann for 11/10, 1 week after the midterm elections, lobbyists told me. My report with @MontyTayloe for @Comm_Daily: communicationsdaily.com/arti…
For a company the everyone says will be installing low-band spectrum on 80k towers, $SPCX is sure focused on making sure that they can meet buildout requirements through D2D...

Yesterday @SpaceX announced its biggest move yet into the wireless market with an $8 billion spectrum deal.
Today telecom stocks plunged. @ATT and @Verizon suffered their biggest one-day declines in more than 24 years. For @TMobile, it was the worst percentage drop in more than 13 years.

At $12.35, NextNav trades for between 20 and 25 cents on the dollar. The vast discount is entirely due to regulatory uncertainty. The regulatory situation itself can be analyzed, and I will perhaps do another thread on that next, but the basics question is: do you think this FCC, which pushed Echostar and Grain into the arms of SPCX, and which approved the Anterix 5x5 R&O, is going to let the only other piece of low-band languish with 1995 rules? I think not.

Last week we saw the acquisition of 800 MHz spectrum for $8 billion by SpaceX.
This is the most relevant comparable transaction NextNav $NN has had or will have before it runs its own deal process (post-FCC process). It is vital that shareholders know how to interpret it. Maybe someone has broken down the math, but I haven’t seen it. So, I will lay out how I think about it here.

$NN I understand we have strong support at key administrative levels but I believe they want to wait until after midterms. They don’t want any distractions before midterms. After midterms, full steam ahead.

SpaceX is officially backing $NN’s proposal in an FCC letter dated Aug. 10. NextNav says SpaceX’s filing supports putting scarce low-band spectrum to productive use and highlights the value of its ground-based 5G-powered 3D PNT network as a backup and complement to GPS.

Congratulations to Danielle on her nomination by President Trump to serve as a Commissioner on the FCC.
Danielle is a dedicated public servant and has consistently delivered policy wins from bridging the digital divide and protecting consumers to advancing public safety.

LOLOL... #cluelesscult
$ASTS has known they needed to acquire more launch partners for a long time.
To think they’re over dependent on Blue Origin is unfair. The New Glenn anomaly is most definitely a multi month setback for $ASTS constellation, but it is not the end of the world.
ISRO has proven they can get metal to orbit. I believe Scott mentioned they can fit 2 BBs on their rockets.
ULA Vulcan should be back to work soon, and if the US government deems $ASTS business as a national security necessity, they’ll allow the company to skip the line for Falcon 9 and Vulcan launches.
Again, launch is not the bottleneck. It has not been for a while. The most important thing is producing satellites. Getting the factory up to speed continues to be the top priority, imo. $ASTS has executed well on that as of recently.

I agree this is the most significant statement, an acknowledgement of the reality that Starlink demand is not unlimited. 20K V3 BB sats is enough for 200M+ users worldwide, 1200 V2 DTC satellites may be sufficient for occasional use by up to 2B mobile subs
This is the link to actual interview and not the editorialized article. Interesting.
The single biggest insight is Gwynne saying "I don't think we'll have more than 15 or 20,000 Starlink satellites."
There is room for interpretation (like maybe she's referring to broadband alone), but the DTC (starlink mobile) FCC filing itself is for 15k.
A cap on constellation size could point to better V4 sats increasing capacity, other connection sat class (laser to ground) for things like AI sat connection), or simply conviction in AI Sats leading to reprioritization from capacity. Any or some combination of all.
our current model's indication Starlink traffic would increase as a function of AI Sat usage, so connection capacity demand should really only go in one direction... up.

.@charter knows the problem. Charter is winning in mobile but losing in home broadband. The data shows the gap is not closing. 📉🔥

VIASAT files Petition to Deny Ligado Skyterra NEXT SAT-MOD-20251206-00374 application.
"Ligado’s request is fatally flawed.
Ligado incorrectly claims that it has completed coordination of the proposed “SkyTerra Next” operations with Viasat and its subsidiary, Inmarsat (which conducts extensive operations in the L band, including in support of critical national security and safety-of-life applications)."
