Ralph Merkle invented a piece of public key cryptography as an undergraduate and his professor told him to drop the project. In 1974 at Berkeley he proposed a way for two people to establish a shared secret over a public channel using puzzles. His professor did not see the point. He dropped the class and kept working. His paper was rejected by a journal for being outside the mainstream. Diffie and Hellman later credited him as a co-inventor of public key cryptography. Merkle trees, the data structure that makes blockchains verifiable, carry his name. The most important cryptographic idea of the century got a failing grade first.
