In Bangladesh, only 4 in 10 registered deaths are female, while 6 in 10 are male. This means women and girls are underrepresented in the official record, even in death. And it is not just a data gap; it is an issue of visibility, rights, and gender equity.
In July, we were proud to have Subhashree Dash, CRVS Technical Manager in Asia and the Pacific, join partners from the Gender Equity Unit and @BRACJPGSPH
to share new research findings on both the barriers and facilitators to female death registration in Bangladesh with governments and public health stakeholders, in collaboration with the @BloombergDotOrg #Data4Health Initiative.
Subhashree spoke on behalf of Vital Strategies, highlighting the status of female death registration in the country and emphasizing how these findings will inform our ongoing partnership with the government, helping to build more inclusive and equitable CRVS systems that truly #CountEveryone.

August 10 marked #AfricaCRVSDay, dedicated to the critical role of #CRVS in building trusted digital public infrastructure. We’re celebrating the launch of Cameroon’s 2025-2029 strategic plan for strengthening CRVS, in collaboration with the Bloomberg Philanthropies #Data4Health Initiative.
In Cameroon, an estimated 8 million people live without proof of legal identity. And only 62% of children under the age of 5 are registered in the civil registry. The new strategic plan outlines a comprehensive course of action to build a CRVS system that #CountsEveryone and is:
✅ Accessible
✅ Integrated
✅ Inclusive
✅ Sustainable
✅ Secure
Congratulations to the National Civil Status Registration Office (BUNEC), Ministry of Public Health, Ministry of Decentralization and Local Development, and National Institute of Statistics.

Equality starts with visibility.
However, 45% of women in low- and middle-income countries do not have a legal identity and significant gender data gaps still exist across global health systems.
Comprehensive and inclusive data is key to achieving equitable health systems where all women are counted and included.

Accurate health data is essential for effective policy and planning, yet many deaths go uncounted or lack a reliable cause of death.
Today in Ethiopia, we joined @FMoHealth and @EPHIEthiopia to launch ImpactHDSS Ethiopia, a new initiative to improve the collection and use of data on births, deaths and causes of death.
Why does this new initiative matter? It will help:
🔷 Enhance birth and death registration to improve data accuracy
🔷 Strengthen Ethiopia’s Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS)
🔷 Link health data to the national civil registration system for better policymaking
🔷 Support evidence-based public health decisions to save lives
Strong data systems = Smarter decisions = Healthier communities.

“Where countries are implementing digital public infrastructure, the transformative power can be seen.”
🇱🇰 Last week, our CRVS Technical Director Martin Bratschi presented on the urgency behind integrating civil registration and vital statistics (#CRVS) systems into digital public infrastructure (#DPI) at Sri Lanka’s Digital Public Infrastructure Summit.
❓But what is #DPI? And what does it have to do with #CRVS?
🛜 DPI is a set of multi-purpose digital systems that support the delivery of public and private sector services. It can be the difference between service providers and recipients jumping through several hoops versus a couple of clicks that safely and securely enable access to services.
⭐ A critical benefit of DPI is its capacity to provide a trusted source of information about all residents of a country. This is where CRVS comes in and provides a flow of data about birth and death to DPI.
🌏 But CRVS systems are often not yet fully digitalized—a step that is critical for integration with DPI. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with the Registrar General's Department, @UNDP and @WHO to digitalize Sri Lanka’s CRVS system.
