James Talarico separates legal tax loopholes from outright cheating, and argues that collecting taxes already owed should come before adding new ones “You know, there's, there's crazy stuff in our tax code that says you can write off your private jet, your mega yacht as business expenses, right?” “I mean, this whole tax system that we have now really allows the people at the very top to accumulate and amass more wealth without any taxation.” “I mean, we, I was reading that if we just collected the taxes that the top 1% owes, no new taxes, just collecting what's already owed, it would raise something like $172 billion every year.” “It's both, it's both the legalized loopholes that you can get away with, but it's also people who just know they're not going to get, but no one's going to crack down on them.” w/ @jamestalarico

Presidents certainly have the right to pick their Chiefs of Staff, but selecting Stephen Miller shows that Donald Trump has learned nothing from the message Americans sent him in this election. Miller is the architect of some of the worst policies of this presidency, from the cruel and chaotic ICE enforcement to the tariffs jacking up your costs. Promoting him isn’t only bad for this Administration, it’s bad for the American people.

James Talarico draws a distinction between celebrating business success and accepting extreme wealth alongside child poverty “Some people have asked me if I'm demonizing billionaires.” “And I've said that I think I'm humanizing billionaires because for one of our own residents to become the world's first trillionaire while one in five Texas children live in poverty, to me, that is a spiritual sickness.” “I want people to be successful.” “When businesses are successful, people are successful and I'm all for that, but to accumulate more wealth than you could possibly spend in a hundred lifetimes while we have people starving in this one, to me, that, that means we're not fulfilling our full humanity.” w/ @jamestalarico

I came to understand after leaving MAGA that the coordinated, multi-decade demonization, dehumanization and vilification of Democrats, liberals, etc., fuel a lot of the rage and fear within MAGA. I am not defending anyone’s ignorance, but the right-wing propaganda and agitprop have long been effective, consistent and disciplined. But this backfired on the GOP this election, and enough voters said "enough." Democrats can counter the mis- and dis-information by doing what many of their candidates did this year: going into communities, humanizing politics and showing that we agree more than we disagree on many issues.
Sanders: We have to remind people the difference of the party who supports freedom and the Democrats who want to push this crazy socialist idea of our country. I don't think we did a good enough job drawing that contrast over the last several weeks.

On April 12, 1943, after Nazi defeats at El Alamein and Stalingrad, Hitler named Martin Bormann as Privatsekretär des Führers, formalizing the status of the fanatically loyal and bureaucratically effective Bormann as Hitler's top aide, which he remained for the final two years.

Zohran Mamdani just did what most Democrats and Republicans are too gutless to do. He looked straight into the camera and said the quiet part out loud: Republicans called Obama a socialist every single day for 8 years. It didn’t stop him. Now they’re trying the same tired red-baiting on anyone who wants a New Deal instead of the raw deal working people have been force-fed for decades. People are hungry for something real. Not more corporate welfare dressed up as “moderation.” Not more “public-private partnerships” that somehow always privatize the profits and socialize the losses. Mamdani is right. The socialist smear is a dead tactic. The only question left is whether the Democratic Party has the spine to actually deliver for the people who keep electing them… or if they’ll keep protecting the same donors who’ve been extracting wealth from this country for 40 years. Keep going, Mayor. The old guard is terrified for a reason, the midterms have certainly proven a new worth. – at District of Columbia, USA

Stephen A. Smith PRESSES Abdul El-Sayed on Abolishing ICE — Then Gets a Firm Answer on Open Borders Stephen A. Smith: You’ve said the only way forward is to abolish ICE and start from scratch. What does that mean? Dr. Abdul El-Sayed: Let me be clear: I believe we ought to have a safe, secure southern border. I believe you ought to enforce immigration law, but not through masked men with AR-15s acting against the Constitution. ICE didn’t exist before this century. It’s not part of the Constitution. ICE is not about immigration. It’s about making a show of immigration and normalising paramilitary force on our streets. I believe we need to undo it and build a system that enforces immigration law while respecting the Constitution. Stephen A. Smith: Is there any condition under which you think open borders are acceptable? Dr. Abdul El-Sayed: No. You have to have borders that you can control. There’s no question about that. People think ICE is about border enforcement, but it’s not. Customs and Border Protection enforces the border. ICE handles immigration enforcement inside the country. I went to Minneapolis during the height of Project Metro Surge. Some of the things I saw, I never thought I would see in the United States of America. We can’t allow that to continue.
