Pat Murphy changed the course of my life, more than any other person... And I hated him for it for a long time. Quick story about how getting kicked off the ASU baseball team in college changed the course of my life for the better. These last few weeks have been weird for me. Watching this person who I had such a challenging relationship with get celebrated endlessly in the media is a weird phenomenon. Out of high school I signed a scholarship to play baseball at Arizona State. Much to mother's dismay i turned down more "educationally oriented" opportunities to play for the #1 team in the country. It was baseball heaven. The walls covered with the retired numbers of all time legends, Barry Bonds, Reggie Jackson etc. etc. My freshman year my roommate was Dustin Pedroia! You couldn't ask for anything better as a 18 year-old dreaming of becoming a pro. Murph was tough. No non-sense, kind of a dick, but the kind of coach you really want approval from. (I see this even in the Brewers players today) My freshman year I didn't get to play, I was pissed, felt like I deserved a shot but there were more senior guys that he felt like deserved continued chances even when they struggled. He was always very loyal to "his guys". There began to develop this sort of weird divide on the team between the older and younger players. The freshman were all very close and a few of us resented some of the chances repeatedly given to the older guys. In addition, we were immature, partied too much, didn't take school serious enough and acted entitled. (I can see this now in reflection). The culmination of all this internal conflict manifested after the "Rookie Show". A tradition at ASU where all the freshman had to make comedy skits and perform them in front of the whole team. A group of us freshman made a video mocking the "Leadership Team", a group of juniors/seniors that met together with murph after practices. Bad idea. I remember playing the video and no one laughing. Terribly awkward. The night ended and I didn't think too much of it, dumb skit but whatever. The next day Murph called me up to his office and told me he was kicking me off the team. He said it was the most offensive skit he'd seen in all his years and that someone needed to take the blame and he believed I was the ring leader. I'll never forget leaving that office and walking home. I was mortified. My whole life was just flipped upside down. I ended up transferring to UCI, where we made the school's first ever run to the college world series where we eliminated ASU and Murph in a walk off win in the 13th inning. It was peak redemption arc for me personally. That same week I was drafted by the yankees, got to play in Charleston, where I met my wife and the rest is sort of history. A real butterfly effect moment on how my life could have been different. For so long I had such a negative view of my experience with Murph. I thought I got screwed. But when you watch someone succeed at so many levels, ultimately ascending to the highest level of the profession, while being adored by everyone around them you have to stop and reflect on whether or not YOU might have been the problem. Regardless the wound is long healed and I have come to appreciate the experience. So cheers Murph CONGRATS on an incredible run.
Pat Murphy's full speech to the Brewers after they won the World Series will bring a tear to your eye ❤️🥺 (via @Brewers)

Ben Affleck says losing his parents taught him that resentment and petty disputes waste your life, while unresolved relationships never repair themselves with time “One of the lessons for me was, at the end of life, what isn’t remembered or valued and just doesn’t matter is all the stupid little shit. Whatever it is—the internecine thing, the work conflict, the petty dispute, the shit we get involved in with ourselves, the little resentments, the time you spent being offended—that shit is just a waste of time. “As much as you can let it go, I think that’s so clearly the way to try to live. If you don’t do it, if you don’t fix it, if you don’t resolve it, it’s not just going to happen with time.”
Jon Gruden reveals Al Davis would walk into his office, draw the punt protection and quiz him on the Chargers' third corner, and says if he didn't have the answers Davis was like a freaking Doberman "With fear. He scared the hell out of me a lot of the times, but you know, he taught me about reading, writing, and arithmetic. He says every day you can't just talk about your offense. You got to talk about our defensive line play, our fourth quarter pass rush. You got to know personnel." "He would ask you, Who's the third corner for the Chargers? And you better know who it is. You better learn how to attack personnel on the other team, not just using your schemes." "But he's the only guy that I ever met that could walk into your office and draw the punt protection and ask you what the calls were." "He really challenged me to think outside the box and learn things that I didn't really have to learn or think about learning before. And if I didn't know the answers, he was like a freaking Doberman, man."

Approximate timeline for Nathan Cleary’s recovery, see below for best case. 28 Sep: emergency surgery within hours, which included an injury washout, IV antibiotics, then fix the effected bones. Nathan's right foot 5th metatarsal is still to be operated on. Given both legs will not be able to have any pressure placed on them, so wheelchair first. Next 7–10 days: infection control is the main concern. That is what makes an open fracture different and unfortunately an extra trip to theatre are possible. Pain is usually at it's peak during this time. The next six weeks: possible first weight through both ankles if the wound and metalwork allow. All cardio training will be done in the water as long as any wounds have closed and no infection identified. 3–4 months: gym, flexibility and RoM of ankles often begin here; pending what pins and rods were used and had to be removed, those wounds should be closed around 4–6 months. 5–6 months: If there were no infections, Metal hypersensitivity or Infected hardware / osteomyelitis took place during Nathan's recovery to date, Round 1 is possible. What also can't be overlooked is Nathan's other foot surgery. Nathan better get use to training in the water, which can be harder (ask the @SeaEagles I took to HMAS Penguin in summer 2002 or going through aqua rehabilitation myself with soldiers who were severely injured from an IED blast during 2015 - 2016. My physio during that time was the physio for the @AUSParalympics track team so she had the latest and greatest rehabilitation methods from around the globe, So I not only received outstanding care, I learnt the current "best practice" rehabilitation methods which is another reason why I have a bespoke insight into what is possible with Nathan's rehabilitation. When I was in a similar rehabilitation position to Nathan's, I used emotional reminders to keep me going, if I was @_nathancleary I would have an @NRL ball and previous @PenrithPanthers GF winners ring on my person at all times as an emotional tool to remind me of the endstate I'm working towards during the hard, lonely and painful times during rehabilitation. @TripleM_NRL @MyMateDobbo @RealMaroon1 @PerthBearsNRL @NthSydneyBears @thefanatics
