The @QuitSugarSummit Metabolic Psychiatry Summit starts TODAY! 🧠 Nine of my favorite voices in the field will be speaking and exploring the connection between metabolic health and mental health, including: Dr. Bret Scher on labs worth discussing with your doctor. Dr. Iain Campbell on the first UK keto pilot for bipolar disorder. Hannah Warren on 5 years of bipolar 1 recovery on vegetarian keto. Robyn Dobbins on diet, cholesterol & bipolar disorder. Dr. Heather Sandison on dementia, sugar & the first 3 days. Plus Natasha Smikles, Donika Hristova, Sophie Kwass & Sly Watts on recovery, research and real-world experience. These conversations make something very clear: mental health care and those struggling with mental illness may deeply benefit from looking beyond the brain alone and. Day 1 is free until 11:59 PM PT tonight. Don't miss it! šŸ‘‡ Register HERE: quitsugarsummit.com/psychiat…

Day 2 of the @QuitSugarSummit Metabolic Psychiatry Summit is underway and I’m speaking TODAY! I’m sharing our journey and I don’t sugarcoat it. Six years of doing everything right and watching my daughter get worse. A lifetime of my own struggles without any lasting relief. I discuss the moment everything changed. What I learned and the uncomfortable truths about how we got here and what we need to be willing to accept responsibility for in order to help our children, ourselves, and our families achieve better, healthier outcomes. If you’ve ever felt like you’ve tried everything… I’ve been there. I wish I had known this all along. That’s why I will continue to advocate for metabolic therapies to be the first thing we discuss when talking about our mental and physical health instead of trying everything else first and finding it as a last resort. The summit runs October 21–25, online and FREE. Registration link below! @metcollective

It's a big day for the field of Metabolic Psychiatry! Many of you know our origin story--how our son @matthewbaszucki recovered from a five year battle with bipolar disorder using ketogenic and other metabolic therapies. Since then, we've launched @BaszuckiGroup and have backed more than twenty clinical trials of ketogenic therapy for serious mental illness, the first of which are now being published with promising results. We started @Metabolic_Mind to share science, strategies and stories from the field with families like ours. We launched the Coalition for Metabolic Health @metcoalition to advance policy. But there was still a gap. Fourteen months ago, Harvard-trained psychiatrist @GeorgiaEdeMD--one of the founders of the field and a close collaborator of @BaszuckiGroup--came to us with a problem and an opportunity. Her inbox was flooded with messages from practitioners around the world who wanted to be part of the metabolic psychiatry movement. They longed for community and training; they wanted to share what they were learning about using ketogenic and other metabolic therapies to treat and even reverse mental illness and to improve overall well-being in their patients; they wanted to both help and learn from other doctors, nurse practitioners, dieticians, therapists, social workers, health coaches and scientists. Dr. Ede barely had time to reply to all the inquiries; would Baszucki Group step up to help? The answer was a resounding yes. Our dedicated team of scientists, clinicians, program managers, and lived experience experts got right to work. Today, just over a year later, I am thrilled to share that our new initiative--the Global Network for the Advancement of Metabolic Psychiatry (MetPsy) @met_psy--is live! MetPsy is a community of scientists and practitioners dedicated to scaling research, education, and clinical care in metabolic psychiatry worldwide. We launch at a pivotal time. As the field expands, demand for resources has grown among researchers and clinicians, as well as the patients they serve. MetPsy addresses this need by providing a centralized network for professional collaboration, shared resources, access to accredited courses, and tools for advancing clinical practice. Alongside this launch, we've also announced a grant from our family foundation to establish the new McLean Center for Metabolic Psychiatry, a flagship clinical care, research and medical education and training center at @McLeanHospital, a member of Mass General Brigham. Medical education and training initiatives will be co-led by @ChrisPalmerMD's MH² , a clinical practice, training, and education hub. Our prior five years of investments in science, education and clinical care form the foundation for the MetPsy community. It is fitting that this center finds its home in Boston. Along with Stanford, where @ShebaniMD ran the first clinical trial of keto for serious mental illness, Boston has been a birthplace of the field. It was there that pioneering physicians like @GeorgiaEdeMD, @ChrisPalmerMD and @MattBernstein6 (Accord), along with @loricalabresemd in nearby Connecticut, first advanced a new way of understanding and treating mental disorders. Their commitment to the field has helped make this day possible, as has scientific leadership from Harvard and McLean's Dost Unger and Virginie-Anne Chouinard, along with so many others. I want to extend my deepest thanks to the staff at Baszucki Group--especially the MetPsy team led by Executive Director @KirkNylen in close partnership with @julie_milder, Karen Romans and Soly Lee--for the passion and dedication that led to launching this program in record time. As a family, we were blessed with our son's full recovery from what was supposed to be a chronic, lifelong mental illness. Our investment in MetPsy and the new center at McLean is @DavidBaszucki and my way of giving back and offering hope to families like ours. Join the network today!
A major milestone today for the field of Metabolic Psychiatry, with the launch of the Global Network for the Advancement of Metabolic Psychiatry! 🧠⚔ MetPsy unites researchers and clinicians worldwide to advance evidence-based practice in metabolic psychiatry through clinical care, education, and research. Excited for the work ahead and all this group will accomplish!

Today marks a historic milestone for metabolic psychiatry! Baszucki Group is launching the Global Network for the Advancement of Metabolic Psychiatry (MetPsy), alongside a $20 million investment to establish the McLean Center for Metabolic Psychiatry at McLean Hospital, a Harvard Medical School affiliate. For years, I've argued that mental disorders can be understood as metabolic disorders impacting the brain. Advancing this field requires rigorous scientific research, innovative clinical care, and education and training to bring emerging discoveries into clinical practice. This investment will help advance all three. I'm particularly excited to be leading the education and training initiatives at both McLean Hospital and MH². We'll be developing clinical case conferences, journal clubs, symposia, CME programs, and other opportunities for clinicians and scientists to learn, collaborate, and help shape the future of metabolic psychiatry. I am deeply grateful to Baszucki Group for their extraordinary commitment to this field and to the many researchers, clinicians, patients, and families who have helped bring us to this moment. Patients deserve better treatments, and together, we have an opportunity to transform mental health care. Read the full announcement: mh2.health/announcement/x

Today we introduce the Global Network for the Advancement of Metabolic Psychiatry, MetPsy, built for researchers and clinicians dedicated to advancing metabolic interventions in mental health. MetPsy gives the global community one place to find collaborators, access shared best practices and training, and follow the latest research. It also offers funders a clear entry point to support the field as it moves from promising studies to clinical implementation. The launch coincides with a $20 million grant from Baszucki Group to establish the McLean Center for Metabolic Psychiatry at @McLeanHospital, a member of Mass General Brigham. A defining initiative for the field, the Center will combine research, clinical practice, and specialized training to deliver metabolic approaches in psychiatric care at scale, a model we hope will set the stage for others to follow.

As always, I thank you for the shout-out. Here is the link to the meetup founded by @MsMiaMendez and led by me: meetup.com/mentalhealthandth…
There are so many things that might have had an impact on my taper. I recommend going slowly and doing a hyperbolic taper. Gut health is equally as important when tapering off of psychiatric drugs. Most drugs are absorbed in the gut so even having diarrhea can complicate a taper by creating inconsistent dosages. Inconsistent dosing can sometimes look like an illness returning but symptoms can also be caused by medication. I’ve monitored my ketones for 2 1/2 years and ketones help me function again and also help stabilize me during my taper. When I’m in deep enough ketosis I don’t experience mental health symptoms of my schizophrenia, depression, anxiety, or agoraphobia. Many people have a similar experience. I just started doing a Free X Spaces meet up and am in the process of setting a date for my next one. Support through a taper is very important. For me it involves my psychiatrist, family doctor, and metabolic psychiatry dietitian. There are other free support groups besides mine but I love connecting with people like me so I hope you’ll consider attending mine. Here are some other places to get free support: @BFRS501c3 @KetoCounselor @MsMiaMendez @StevenTrunce These were the people I actually used on my own journey: @GeorgiaEdeMD, @KetoPotterRDN, @LkronR How long have you taken psychiatric drugs for? Have you encountered any problems?

Two communities. One shared mission. This Wednesday, we’re bringing our keto mental health communities together for something just as important as nutrition: connection. No presentation. Just real people, real conversations, and shared experiences. Community and connection are metabolic therapies too. šŸ”„

šŸ“£ Participant recruitment for a ketogenic diet and bipolar disorder study at the University of Pittsburgh. Mary Phillips, MD, and her team at the University of Pittsburgh are recruiting adults with Bipolar I or Bipolar II for a study examining how a ketogenic diet may influence brain structure and function. pittplusme.org/studyarms/pub… Participants may be eligible if they are 18 to 40 years old, have a diagnosis of Bipolar I or Bipolar II, have a smartphone and are willing to complete daily finger prick testing. The would also need to be able to attend in person study visits at UPMC in #Pittsburgh. Compensation is available. This is a very cool study because the outcomes will help move the field of metabolic psychiatry beyond questions about whether ketogenic metabolic therapy may help some people with psychiatric illness toward a better understanding of what may be changing in the brain when it does. I If you know someone with Bipolar I or Bipolar II who is between 18 and 40 and within traveling distance of Pittsburgh, please share this with them. And even if nobody immediately comes to mind, sharing this post can help the research team reach the people they need. Participant recruitment remains one of the biggest practical barriers to getting this research done. But with your help sharing within your private and professional networks? Maybe no so much! #MetabolicPsychiatry #BipolarDisorder #KMT #ClinicalResearch #ResearchParticipation
