Charles Fitzroy belonged to an influential political and literary dining club of wealthy Whig politicians, writers, and patrons who met at taverns to toast Whig women, support a Protestant succession and commission a famous series of portraits by Sir Godfrey Kneller.

This VOC ship was built with Peter the Great's active, hands-on participation.
In 1698, the Tsar even received an apprenticeship certificate from Dutch master shipbuilder Gerrit Claesz Pool. It states that "Peter Michaeloff" had worked at the VOC shipyard for about four and a half months. He was described as a hardworking and competent carpenter while helping build the Pieter en Paul, a frigate over 100 feet long.

A very interesting historic fact is that the Dutch were crucial in shaping modern Russian navy, as Russians basically learned the know-how from the Dutch in late 17th century.
Peter the Great personally went to Netherlands to work with Dutch shipbuilders.
Russia had almost no professional navy or shipbuilding tradition beforehand. Because of this the famous Tsar Peter the Great recruited large numbers of Dutch shipwrights, carpenters, sailors, and officers, ordered ships from Dutch yards. The Russians also imported Dutch practical methods and terminology, to the point where many Dutch nautical terms are still in use in Russian today.
But regarding the photo posted by Liz, it's funny that Peter the Great actually hated ceremonies like this and preferred to work with Dutch shipbuilders as one of the regular carpenters, so that he would learn from them, even traveling incognito and introducing himself simply as Peter Mikhailov.
Peter the Great was exceptionally tall (over 2 meters or roughly 6'7"-6'8"), so him pretending he was someone else was more to have an excuse to skip ceremonies rather than to actually try to fool people.

Prince Maurice, who was vice-admiral, was aboard his flagship, The Defiance, which the storm sank.

Huge is an understatement! I was at the University of Wisconsin-Madison when this came out. We had an enrollment of about 42,000 and thousands pulled a sheet off their bed for TOGA I and the next year TOGA II. It was a campus-wide party with bands and the movie projected on the side of a building. Fun times!๐

Another October storm for #StuartSaturday!
In 1625 an unseasonably early October storm devastated the Dutch blockade of Dunkirk.
The gleeful Dunkirkers poured out to lay waste to unprotected Dutch shipping.
In 2 weeks 150 Dutch ships, including 20 warships, were captured or sunk.
