It’s worth noting the Court ordered Meta to pay New Mexico $25B for the claims that were just settled for $460M by 46 other state AGs, buried inside of the $18B child harms settlement.

Meta paid $5B to the FTC to settle the Cambridge Analytica case, overpaid to ensure their leadership wasn't held responsible, and another $100M to the SEC. Sure this is a drop in the bucket for Meta but $25B 8ish years later, and maybe the largest fine ever, is not insignificant.

Kudos to New MEXICO for setting a national example of what state-level Big Tech accountability can look like.
A counter-example by @NewMexicoDOJ - you can take Meta to court and win.

The sickest passage I've ever read about anyone was this story of how Kaplan sexually harassed his subordinate Sarah Wynn-Williams after she has a troubled pregnancy. It's from her book Careless People on the creeps running Meta.
Sharing some news here on the professional front for me. After more than 15 years at Meta, I’ve decided the time is right for me to move on from my role as Chief Global Affairs Officer. It’s been an extraordinary journey and opportunity, and I’m very proud of the team we built and work we did. I will always be grateful to @finkd and @sherylsandberg for bringing me in all those years ago and supporting me and my work all along the way. It has been a true privilege to work with Mark – one of the great founders, builders, and strategic CEOs in history – as well as his leadership team, and the incredible Global Affairs team we’ve assembled over the years.
I’ll be at the company for a few months to help with the transition, and then look forward to catching my breath, making up for lost time with my beautiful wife, catching all of my daughter’s high school tennis matches, and surprising my son with frequent unannounced visits at college. Somewhere in there will also find some time to figure out what I want to do next–will let you know when I do!

Kaplan oversaw Meta's worst moments, greenlit the killing of good legislation in states and Congress, and ensured that Meta shirked accountability at every turn. He'll be viewed as a success at Meta for his role in "delay, deny, deflect," but history shouldn't remember him well.

This is what billionaire ownership of the media means:
Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta shut down the No Kings account for hours during the height of their protests.
Meta suppressed accounts supporting Brazil President Lula da Silva in the recent election.
Larry Ellison’s TikTok blocked advertising for a documentary criticizing Elon Musk.

It is a basic principle of American democracy that the government can’t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs or what they say. But that’s exactly what the Trump Administration is doing to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota.
To understand why this is so appalling, it’s important to know the facts. Congresswoman Omar came to this country with her father when she was 12 years old. Five years later, her father became a naturalized citizen. If Ilhan had been 18 at the time, she would have had to apply for citizenship separately. But because she was 17, she became a naturalized citizen automatically.
Congresswoman Omar went on to graduate from college, work as a community organizer, become the first Somali-American legislator elected to public office in the U.S., and win a seat in Congress. There, she has been one of the Trump Administration’s fiercest critics, which has led the president to repeatedly single her out as someone who he believes does not belong in this country.
Now the Administration is actively trying to deport Congresswoman Omar, seemingly based solely on the unsubstantiated theory that she was actually 18 when her father was naturalized, and therefore is not a citizen. Federal agents have raided her home, confiscated personal records, and seized her phone — all to try and uncover a nonexistent smoking gun from 20 years ago that will somehow make their case.
Think about that. The full weight of the federal government is being brought down on a law-abiding elected official because she has dared to criticize the president. And it’s not the first time this has happened. Under President Trump, the Justice Department has repeatedly gone after those he considers his political enemies — from the Attorney General of New York, to the former head of the FBI, to members of the Federal Reserve.
In those cases, the prosecutions either stalled or were dismissed for having no basis in law, and the same is likely to happen in this case. But not before Congresswoman Omar’s life has been turned upside down, her legal bills have piled up, and she’s been forced to spend time fighting unsubstantiated charges instead of serving the people of Minnesota.
The fact that any president, or any administration, is willing to engage in such transparent efforts to intimidate someone should outrage all Americans, regardless of how they feel about Congresswoman Omar’s political views. Because if this becomes the new normal, there’s no reason to believe it will stop with her — or that future presidents, in either party, won’t do the same.

They certainly took their time fixing this action that was allegedly just due to "automated systems." I look forward to a more ample explanation by Zuckerberg to the next Congress, with internal Meta communications provided to back up their professed ignorance and innocence.
When accounts post, share or comment at very high frequencies it can trigger automated systems. That's what happened with the No Kings IG account in the lead up to today's day of action. Unfortunately, that automated action was clearly taken in error. Everything is now working as it should and we sincerely apologize.
