Commercial surrogacy is exploitative, cruel & treats women like brood mares. UK ‘altruistic’ model is no better. Large sums of money changing hands, babies often not seeing their mothers again, women left with regret & birth injuries. Stop surrogacy now. insider.com/war-in-ukraine-h…

We oppose the puberty blockers trial, and restate our opposition loud and clear. Irrevocable harm will be caused to children, including infertility. Stop this @DHSCgovuk
🚨226 children, some as young as 11 years old, are about to be given £500 worth of shopping vouchers by the UK Government in order to undertake a puberty blockers trial, placing them on a pathway to infertility. This is the medical scandal of our time. jamesesses.co.uk/p/state-san…

Nothing normalizes #surrogacy in a country quite like engaging in it at the highest level of government. I would like to see the human rights assessment underpinning this decision. #wensvader #draagmoeder

The Prime Minister of the Netherlands is having a baby with a surrogate mother. Given theirs is a country where women are sold in shop windows we shouldn’t be surprised.

Your regular reminder that babies bond in utero with their mother, regardless of egg used in the pregnancy, and that surrogacy is 3x higher risk for severe complications including sepsis, pre eclampsia and postpartum haemorrhage. Shameful @MinPres

A roll call of the 169 known victims is expected to be read out today in the court and this number is expected to grow. This is #surrogacy #humantrafficking.
🇬🇷 The largest trial ever held in Chania begins today. 📍 October 14, 2026 The case of the Mediterranean Fertility Institute (MFI) is not an isolated instance of regulatory non-compliance, but rather an example of an organized criminal network operating within -and profiting from- a legal surrogacy system. The MFI affair is not an isolated case resulting from inadequate regulation; it is a direct product of the Greek regulatory framework. The regulatory infrastructure was in place, yet this did not prevent trafficking from occurring on an industrial scale under the supervision of a regulatory authority whose president is now facing criminal charges. The legal framework does not eliminate exploitation; instead, it provides the infrastructure through which such exploitation is organized and concealed. A succession of regulatory failures -in India, Thailand, Nepal, Cambodia, Ukraine, Georgia, Kenya, Mexico, Colombia, and now Greece- demonstrates that every regulatory model creates conditions ripe for the very abuses it claims to prevent. Legality lends legitimacy to the transaction, while market pressure to lower surrogate compensation and raise client fees creates structural incentives for human trafficking. The MFI case does not argue for better regulation. It demonstrates that regulation, in itself, cannot resolve the inherent contradiction of surrogacy: using a woman’s body as an instrument for a third party is incompatible with the principle that the human body cannot be commodified and with the prohibition against human trafficking, regardless of the contractual form the arrangement takes.

Today the Mediterranean Fertility Institute trial opens in Chania, Crete. 350+ victims and counting. 33 defendants. A trial expected to last five years. We demand it proceed without delay, until justice is done. Surrogacy is human trafficking. #MFIcase #SurrogacyIsHumanTrafficking abolition-ms.org

I’ve written about how the word mother is being erased in this new corner of the culture wars; surrogacy. Under a #bekind mantra, women are being told to give up their bodies and become ‘extreme babysitters’ for couples who can’t have babies. The world of surrogacy is certainly a complicated issue but international businesses, including those based in Britain, are pushing the boundaries on our own surrogacy rules. Thanks to all those who spoke to me for this piece. Gift link below:

Our friends @CIAMS_Coalition will be protesting in Crete this week demanding justice for the surrogate mothers and children in this harrowing case. We hope justice is done.
The trial of the Mediterranean Fertility Institute opens on 14 October in Chania, Crete: 98 women exploited as surrogate mothers, 71 subjected to egg extraction, 26 defendants, 17 charges including participation in a criminal organisation and human trafficking. It was Greece's largest surrogacy provider, licensed and supervised, and the trafficking happened inside that legal framework. Regulation did not prevent it; it built the infrastructure for it. With To Mov and our partners, CIAMS demands one thing: that this trial proceed on 14 October and not be postponed. In Greece, trafficking trials are routinely delayed for years until dispersed migrant witnesses can no longer testify. Every adjournment is a step toward impunity. ‘Belén was allowed to see Piero once more, as he was legally required to leave the hospital with the woman who had given birth to him. 'I held Piero in my arms at that moment. He was making little noises and crying, and I knew that he recognised me,'

“I loved my baby very much. I had already bonded with him - it was impossible for me not to.” Belén’s story echoes that of so many other surrogate mothers. Surrogacy is exploitative and cruel. It must be abolished @DHSCgovuk
