I finished reading 📖 Emotional Agility: Get Unstuck, Embrace Change, and Thrive in Work and Life by @SusanDavid_PhD. This is full on geek-out on how emotional granularity and agility benefit us as individuals and as leaders. Susan challenges a culture that prizes bullshit veneer positivity over authenticity and explores how the way we deal with our emotions shapes everything that matters: our actions, careers, relationships, health, and happiness.

Understand the critical difference between sympathy, empathy, and compassion:
Sympathy
↳ "I'm sorry you're in pain."
Empathy
↳ "I can imagine what this pain feels like."
Compassion
↳ "You are suffering and I will do what I can to help."

This is a full-on emotion researcher geek out with @susandavid_phd on how emotional granularity & agility benefit us. We think that denying our emotions makes us stronger & more resilient, but research shows that it actually makes us LESS resilient. bit.ly/3kyzVXP

ALT "Toxic positivity is forced, false positivity. It may sound innocuous on the surface, but when you share something difficult with someone and they insist that you turn it into a positive, what they're really saying is, My comfort is more important than your reality." - Dr. Susan David, Author of Emotional Agility (Listen to this episode of Dare to Lead on Spotify now!)

What I like about all of these books are how practically the lessons can be applied to everyone’s lives. If I was to recommend a starting point I would say try ‘Emotional Agility’ by @SusanDavid_PhD. It has some great reframing principles which can make an immediate difference in how you approach life’s stressors, etc..

Perseverance is a necessary ingredient for human thriving, but we must be thoughtful about what we’re persevering at and why. There’s nothing admirable about working doggedly toward a goal that no longer matters to you.

I read the book years ago, I guess in 2017.
By far, it is one of the best books I have read on the topic of being flexible and adaptive with our emotions rather than suppressing or ignoring them. Thanks Susan!

We love the @SusanDavid_PhD series of drawings which summarise beautifully core coaching concepts and frameworks. So relatable. What story tell yourself about yourself that you find difficult to shake? Fixed 'v' growth mindset and how to take that step forward... #GrowthMindset

Brian Harman is an underrated quote. These two stood out from today's press conference. In talking about his decision to play the week before the Masters he said, "I need the pressure so I can test my game against that pressure."
And this on the hostile environment at Royal Liverpool: "My goal is to try and get to those uncomfortable places as many times as I can."
It reminded me of this quote from @SusanDavid_PhD's book "Emotional Agility", which is one of the best books I've read recently. It was about the cost of favoring comfort over discomfort, about the lost opportunities for growth.
"I think avoidance is the enemy of great. Avoidance—particularly avoidance of discomfort—is even the enemy of good. It’s the enemy of the growth and change that lead to flourishing," she wrote.
