📢 My book Sexed is out in paperback this month! I haven't actually seen it yet thanks to a missing parcel but it has a brand-new preface (including some thoughts about US women's rights under Trump) & a new cover 1/2
I don't hate Oxford Street but this is a good read, with Virginia Woolf in it

I’ve read this and I still can’t quite believe they would ever be so stupid.
NEW: BBC will no longer have a dedicated education editor as part of proposal that will see 100 jobs go across BBC News.
School leaders call the plan “deeply regrettable” and ask for a rethink.

The list sent by Harold Wilson to his cabinet of “little things that mean a lot”, including the protection of pubs, concessionary fares for the elderly, empty office blocks and “the future of the pint”.
Echoes of this in Burnham’s small but popular policies today.

This is becoming a bit of a debate. It should be said lots of councillors have full time work outside of the Town Hall.
Then at the same time we are often told that being a councillor is exhausting, and 'like a full time job'.
Labour group seem to think the arrangement is all fine, especially to avoid the 'cost' of a council by-election and the fact residents have already been to the polls twice already in Camden Square this year.
That cost bit is a little moot given we've just seen Keir Starmer trigger a more expensive by-election right here when he could've stayed on as an MP. The cost is a big factor, or it isn't.
Maybe nobody will care and it's just a flash in the pan today and this week, but problems may arise if a council meeting clashes with a vote in the Commons – and that would be a self-made problem; nobody can be in two places at the same time even if Camden and Westminster aren't too far away in distance.
Guardian report on updated NHS rules mandating single-sex spaces in hospitals (clinical need comes first, of course).
Women should never have had to go to court for this but those that did are heroes: @ForWomenScot, @DarlingtonUnion, @MForstater & more). Link:

New suicide figures have been published by @ONS: 5,738 suicides were registered for England in 2025.
75% were in men. 1 in 65 men die by suicide.
And in the details: a politically sensitive concern, a small encouragement & an important point no media have mentioned.

Gorgeous piece of writing from the fab Anoosh. Why we still love Pooh👇
In praise of Winnie-the-Pooh's idleness, by Anoosh Chakelian: AA Milne’s world is enchantingly empty of the philosophies we have spent the last hundred years reading into it. newstatesman.com/culture/boo…
I was a trustee of @StuartHallFdn alongside Greg McLennan for a decade – most recently judging an essay prize earlier this year. He was clever & rigorous & committed, I imagine he was a brilliant teacher, and this is a lovely Guardian obituary by Bill Schwarz (link next)
It's me with Emmeline Pankhurst statue last time i was in Manchester! (should have held arm out straighter & worn a hat). But i am very proud to say i have become a hatless ambassador of the city's small but mighty Pankhurst museum (in advance of my book launch there on Sat). 1/3

Ironically, Conservative-run RBKC has come out in support of the Renters Rights Act because it has increased stability and reduces homelessness via scrapping Section 21 "no fault evictions"...just as the national Party says they will get rid of it.
From PA, at 5:26pm.
Katie Lam has suggested she would scrap the Labour Government’s Renters’ Rights Act.
The shadow housing secretary told a fringe event at the Tory Party conference that the legislation “has to go”.
From PA, at 6:13pm:
A Conservative source said she had been speaking in the broader context of the restrictions and challenges faced by landlords, and this was not a policy announcement.
Friends & followers anywhere near Manchester! this time next week will be about to kick off 2nd of two discussions about my book 📖 on history of feminism at the original, actual suffragette HQ: the Pankhurst museum, where the Women's Social and Political Union was formed 1/3
