Am I sharing my first article? Yes. Am I making one of those hip black & white images to go with it? Absolutely not. It’s about pricing tiers, and why you might not need three.

Happy (actual) Launch Day to my friend, @money_cruncher! His new project, @findcpaco is officially LIVE. I'm extra excited about it because Fall is such a perfect time to give our client lists a refresh and @tcrtalks members get a big discount! 🎉

Until we started scheduling tax prep, I didn't have any way of calculating our capacity. Scheduling, and seeing x number of tax returns to complete x number of days was helpful, but there are other non-tax tasks to consider. So, I built a capacity calculator. Check it out and let me know if you like it. bcannoncpa.com/capacity-chec…

In 2024, I causally posted on #TaxTwitter “does anyone want to buy a virtual bookkeeping/tax firm” and was absolutely shocked to receive 141 LOIs. My firm was sold within a week or two! So, I thought I’d try again, only this time, see if I could help connect other accountants to each other! I asked recently if any accountants were interested in buying or selling a firm… I really didn’t know what to do with all of your responses… I just knew that I wanted to find a way to introduce you to each other and see if what happens for me could happen for you too! Any accountant who wants to buy or sell a firm (or even a portion of their book) can be listed on our private board in The Collaboration Room. Our members are firm owners (the best of the best!) and they can click a button to be introduced to you if they’re interested. Pretty cool, huh? I’m always trying to think of how we can provide more value to our @TCRTalks members and I’m hoping this will make a difference in someone’s life, just like it did for me! exchange.thecollaborationroo…

A few weeks ago I wrote about giving each client a shared room where their agent and ours could work from the same context. I walked through it with a group of firm owners at @TCRTalks this week, and built this visual to show how I'm thinking about it. There are three spaces in the video, and each has a different purpose. The client's space is their own. Their business, their family, their plans, and a place to explore ideas with their agent. They should be able to think through something privately with their agent before deciding to bring us into it. The shared engagement space is where we come together, both client and accountant + their agents. Current financials, tax returns, documents we're waiting on, decisions we've made and why, and what we're working toward. Both agents can work from that shared context, with permissions around what each can see and do. Then there's our space as the accountant. Our workpapers, internal notes, research, and review process. A lot of that stays with us. We choose what moves into the shared space, just as the client chooses what comes across from theirs. That's why the connections between the rooms matter. We're deciding what gets shared, for what purpose, and who/which agents can act on it. I think of it as radical observability. The client and their agent can see where the engagement stands and understand what's happening, while we both still have room to do our own work. The goal is for clients to be able to self-inform. If they're lying in bed wondering about hiring someone or buying a truck, their agent has the context to help them start exploring it. When they're ready to bring us in, we can work through the decision with them. This is a concept walkthrough of the agent native accountant/client relationship I'm building towards.

Please repost! We are considering selling our CPA firm for the right price. Please contact me by email at [email protected] if you have strong interest. 2 Million in annual revenue. Over 40% of the work is bookkeeping and payroll. 3 owners. 2 considering stepping away after transition period and 3rd willing to stay for many years. Over the last 15 years the owners have taken on average 57% of the total revenue home. Thanks!

Why is it so hard?! Maybe it all comes down to confidence in the value we’re providing, which is really what @cbarmorecpa’s pricing session in @TCRTalks came down to I feel like…

How it started… My daughter was ripping pages out of my notebook last night (typical Thursday evening activity around here) and when I was picking up the scraps later, I found this. My original plan for @TCRTalks! Shout out to @TheDancingCPA, @IraGilligan, @LoZabransky, and Ashley. @FortWayneCPA and I had big plans for you, apparently 😂 So cool to see where we started and where we are now! Members describe @TCRTalks as the perfect balance between technical and warm/nonjudgmental, which makes me so happy! Wouldn’t be where we are today without #TaxTwitter 😍 Also, don’t I have the nicest, girliest handwriting?! 🤦‍♀️ I blame it on being left-handed!

One of my old employees reached out to me looking for a new job. I posted what she's looking for in @TCRTalks and within 2 hours, 6 firm owners had reached out to her to schedule an interview! Now THAT'S the power of community. 🥰

I sold my firm because I'd rather be doing this work instead. Coaching firm owners through the conversations I spent years avoiding in my own practice — the ones about fees, scope, the client who's quietly become a problem. Turns out those are the conversations I love when they're someone else's! My boundaries weren't perfect AT ALL. That's part of why I write about them now. Here's what I've realized since: Most firm owners try to fix the operations first. The tech, the pricing, the workflow. Operations matter — but starting there is a bandaid. The boundary work has to come first. So I started writing about it. Firm owners send me their hardest conversations — the price increase they can't send, the client they've wanted to fire for years — and I reframe them publicly into something doable. It's called The Reframe. It runs every Tuesday. If you're great at boundaries already, you're not my audience. The Reframe is for the rest of us. Submit yours → thereframe.co/#submit

most of us started our firms by handing clients our personal cell number. it felt generous. then it became the thing we couldn't undo. here's the part we skip: have you actually just asked them to stop calling your cell? plainly? most of us never do. every time you answer the personal call anyway, you teach them they're the exception to the rule. rewrite the voicemail message. keep a templated text ready. then ask — and remind as often as it takes. you're not pushing them away. you're doing this for them.

Did you hear... CPE and CE! 📢 HUGE thanks to @TCRTalks!
#TaxRetreat Announcement! THIS JUST IN! (I think this is the first time it has been posted) CPE will be offered at @taxretreat! And for the EAs in the room, there will be qualified sessions for CE, too. Thanks @tcrtalks for providing this amazing benefit to our attendees.

I have not posted in a long time... It has been a rough 5 months... I have a pretty severe case of burnout... I have not been able to focus at all. Since I cannot focus it has made everything really hard... My focus has improved a little. I am working on getting back to my normal self... It will take time... But I am working on it... Many of you have reached out to me and I appreciate it. This is something I have to work out for myself! Better days are ahead...

I'm starting a weekly column called The Reframe. for accountants who know what to do — raise the price, fire the client, hold the deadline — and can't quite do it. every issue answers a real submission. first one drops tomorrow, 5/5! bring me the boundary you can't hold: → thereframe.co/#submit

I sold my firm. For the first time in years, I’m a client — not an accountant. And here’s another thing I see now that I didn’t before: Your tax-season auto-reply? You and I both know what it really says. “I’m drowning. Please don’t need anything from me right now.” You’re not wrong to feel that way. We’ve built an industry where “go away for four months” is the only way to survive busy season. That’s not a personal failing. It’s a broken system. And more firm owners are deciding: that’s not the deal anymore.
