I’ve been thinking for a while about how to structure this thread because I wanted to cover #Nyoni’s impact both in possession and out of possession.
There’s simply too much material to fit into one thread without making it exhausting to read, so I decided to split it into separate parts. Long tactical threads can be difficult to get through, and I don’t want this one to feel like a chore.
This part will focus on how Trey Nyoni leaves his mark on the team in possession - how he creates freedom for the full-backs, manipulates the opposition press, and facilitates ball progression through different variations and mechanisms.
Let’s get into it🧵#LFC

Every time Nyoni goes off the pitch, we lose all midfield control in the pivot. Every time Wirtz isn’t playing as the 10, we look toothless in attack without a connector and receiver in half spaces. Interesting dilemmas for Iraola’s 4-2-3-1, both are undroppable in this system.

Some awful defeats in Klopp's opening months at Liverpool:
2-1 at home to Palace
2-0 away to Newcastle
3-0 away to Watford
2-0 away to West Ham
I have total faith in Iraola, like him a lot. Just need to be patient and accept nights like these. Players must stop being so meek.

Love how mature Nyoni was to “extinguish” this transition.
Good positioning, prepares himself well to react, swift on the turn, then doesn’t rush into the challenge. Instead, he looks to get on the goal side, delay and allow his teammates to recover before committing. Maybe an extra second was needed for Jacquet to get closer, but still, Nyoni doesn’t fully sell himself there.
Wins the ball back and ends the sequence with a no-look pass.

We have way too many Europa League level players for a club that should be competing for the CL trophy. Julian Ward has a massive job on his hands trying to clear out this deadwood & rebuild the squad

If he can turn a Bournemouth team into literal league competition I’ll back him till the earth explodes.

It’s exaggerated when we lose and brilliant when we win. If he played Isak and he tore a muscle, he’d be absolutely slaughtered for not rotating the squad. Take it easy, seriously. He has no bad intentions and is currently having to deal with some really difficult circumstances

The holes in the squad (RB, DM, RW) are causing our lack of chance creation, openness and flatness. When they're fixed, everyone will go up a level.

Liverpool going from having arguably the best full-back pairing in world football over the last decade to having no “real” right-back and Tsimikas starting games on the left is quite the contrast.

Iraola is experimenting, trying out different systems and players, assessing who fits his plans before starting to trim the squad. We need to be patient and accept that there will be games like this. Nothing is built overnight
No criticism of Iraola whatsoever. The amount of work ahead of him to establish even remotely acceptable standards is enormous. At least we’re finally starting to see the foundations of an identity, so there’s a clear direction to follow in the transfer market, where there’s also an awful lot of work to be done. This is still a very dysfunctional team #LFC

It’s time we had a discussion about our concepts for building out from the back and diversifying the ways we get into the penalty area and create dangerous opportunities. There’s not enough rotation or runs in behind. Everything is based on long balls and crosses. This isn’t just an issue from today; it’s been a recurring problem for a long time, and we need to improve in this area #LFC

Absolutely agree. Data isn’t everything. What’s important is having a player in the middle of the chain who maintains fluidity, links the different thirds of the pitch, and acts as a link-up player

While, Szoboszlais pressing intensity is higher than Wirtz’s in the first line, imo he doesn’t control the games enough at the 10 position. Wirtz tries to make things happen (yes, despite that graphic going around about his creativity)
Let’s stop experimenting with Szoboszlai in central midfield – it doesn’t work in any setup. Nyoni only functions well alongside Wirtz because he’s a progressive playmaker, but he needs someone who can read his intentions and find pockets of space. We can keep telling ourselves otherwise, but this team is dependent on Florian Wirtz, and yet another game proves it #LFC
People complaining about Wirtz today will understand what it means to play without him. Watch the difference when he comes on the pitch #LFC

Trey Nyoni, the passing so far has been top.
The pass-first midfielder Liverpool have been starving for. Excellent against Arsenal and the same again so far.
Deserved goal.

I’m a fan of man-marking, but not with some of the current player profiles. That’s why Iraola sometimes resorts to a +1, which I really dislike.
This season, I think the best approach is to stick with zonal defending and mixed orientations. Of course, we should gradually start testing man-marking more often to understand its strengths and weaknesses. Ultimately, that’s the system we want to implement
