Call me delusional: we were phenomenal yesterday! 🇧🇦 We are becoming a team with clear patterns and a clear idea. One aspect showed that most clearly yesterday: the high press. Lets break down why. If you don't have a midfield capable of creating and building up play, you try to win the ball higher up the pitch. That also massively interrupts the opponent's own build-up. The very first goal-kick for Poland made it clear: we wanted the ball in the dangerous zone. We would not allow their centre-back to find Zielinski, who then has time on the ball and turn towards our goal, finds steady progress yadi yada you get the point. Our front four plus Bašić were on every goal-kick, lurking the keeper whether he will just kick it long (in which case you drop and move compact) or start the build-up through a centre-back. In this scene Poland tried to build up, which triggered the press, and our front players swarmed (!!!) out. Result: a Hail Mary ball from the centre-back.

A few interesting 🇧🇦 facts pulled from the most recent UEFA data set. - Ivan Bašic has covered the 3rd most distance across all qualified midfielders (4 games, at least 310min ~ around 80min per game). He is only behind the Norway duo Martin Odegaard and Sander Berge who tbf both played the full 360mins. Bašić has slightly less (he would be up there with them). - Amar Memić recorded the 5th highest top speed out of all midfielders (yes, he is considered a Midfielder in the UEFA database). - Tarik Muharemović found himself in a clearance position at the 4th highest rate with 28 clearance attempts (led by Van Dijk with 32). Tarik has already elite positioning.

I will not pretend that I follow Romanian football in detail but I was interested to underdstand what is happening with the squad situation and made a deep dive into the Romanian media: - The "mix-up" was expected for the second game against BiH but Hagi was also critized a lot by former legends (Mutu, Cosmin Contra) for his 3-4-1-2 in Sweden and for the slow midfield. Ianis Hagi was one of the main victims (as always). - Romania has 3 major sportmedia outlets (Digi Sport, Spotmedia, Sport ro) and they all have a different "expected lineup", meaning they have no idea either - He could change to 4-3-3 but he seems stubborn lets assume he sticks to his back 3, what is actually changing? 1) Without Dragusin, Burca will lead the back 3 (very experienced, played against us in Bucurest during the WCQ), Borza is the left WB (Mahmić's Corum paid quite some money for him, he started all games), Strata might start right instead of Ratiu which is a downgrade but tbh this back-line change has minor impact imho. 2) Screciu is expected to play in midfield, actually he is a centre-back in his club. 3) Stanciu / Ianis Hagi is a 1:1 change pretty much. Stanciu is despite the age a great player. 4) Birligea was request 368172 times by the former legends/experts and media. He barely plays in Serie A but is always a threat (he scored against us in Zenica and should have scored another one earlier) Having said that, I do believe Sergej will also mix it up heavily.

Sretno Bosno i Hercegovino.

One of my favourite scenes of yesterdays game. Poland has the ball, we are in some sort of mid block in out own half however, Poland decided to pass back to Potulski and the front 6 is in FULL SPRINT mode chasing them down. Poland manages this quite good actually but our whole team has closed down, distance between Demirović and Muharemović is 25-30m, it is just too crowded and we win the ball eventually back.

Result of that first half was a 61% ball possesion away in Poland. We have complained about the "low block" and we got something totally different, modern, new. Poland is obviously a brilliant team, they make the Euro pretty much every time and I would argue that "Prime BiH" has lost these games regularly. Now, a bunch of kids shows up and competes in a though away game (8 of our players who had minutes yesterday were born in 2002 or later) It is obviously physically impossible and not sustainable to play like that for 90min, which is why even elite-pressing teams decide to set the tone in the first half an hour and try to unsettle the opponent, which we did. I am very proud of the performance yesterday.

One of the biggest issues with our transfers (besides the non-EU slots in certain leagues) are the agencies our players work with. Agencies have the legal expertise and usually a specific market profile and network. For example Gestifute with their global network for South American/Portuguese players, Wassermann all across the globe, CAA Stellar as probably most influential or Roc Nation (mainly active in US sports but its growing in Football as well)... CIES has a good overview on that which I am attaching below. Clubs know how important the relationship with these big agencies are, I would argue they tend to prefer players from them even if the profile does not fit 100% (of course, on the long run they stay in consideration for the next "18 year old big thing" the agency has in their portfolio if they do them a favor here and there). BH players of the current squad are in 11 out of 20 cases the top 3 most valuable clients of their agency, in 14/20 in the top 5. Its interesting to see that all players made significant moves who are with bigger agencies (Esmir just switched recently to Lian Sports), while the ones with a one-man show agent are struggling.

Quick clarification tweet regarding Pejcinovic, Hadzimujovic, Licina, Catovic etc. There seems to be a lot of confusion around players with roots in CG/Serbia linked to the BH team. It is highly questionable whether they even technically qualify to play for us (regardless of whether they want to...we don't know that) Bosnian citizenship is granted via: • Jus sanguinis (right of blood: parents/grandparents were already Bosnian citizens) • Jus soli (right of soil: born on BiH territory) • Adoption • Naturalization (3+ years of permanent residence, or facilitated if married to a BiH citizen) *** Long story short: It is very possible none of the above apply to these players, especially if their parents and grandparents have lived in (todays territory of) CG/Serbia for generations. Wait before you ask "BUT BUT BUT how can Sucic, Budimir, Gudelj, Lovren, Jovic and what not play for Croatia/Serbia?" Simple answer: Both Croatia and Serbia have specific provisions in their citizenship laws (Article 16 in Croatia, Article 23 in Serbia) that allow "members of the Croatian/Serbian people" (pripadnik naroda) to acquire citizenship even without residing there. BH does not have any equivalent rule. ***Thats Citizenship alone, FIFA has added their own "genuine link" requirements for eligibility, which is the reason why Janelt will never play for BH.
