WEBINAR ALERT
PENHALONGA: WHO PAYS THE PRICE FOR GOLD?
Displacement. Destruction. The failure of accountability.
Zimbabweโs gold boom is being celebrated as a driver of economic growth. But in Penhalonga, the story is increasingly one of communities under siege, homes threatened, livelihoods disrupted, infrastructure damaged and residents living with growing safety and environmental concerns.
When mining encroaches on residential areas, when families face displacement and when dangerous operations continue despite regulatory concerns, one question demands an answer: Who is protecting the people?
The Centre for Natural Resource Governance (CNRG) invites you to a critical webinar examining the human cost of gold mining in Penhalonga.
Bringing together affected community voices, legal and mining governance experts, the discussion will interrogate displacement, constitutional and land rights, regulatory failures, institutional accountability and the Right to Say No.
This is not another conversation about how much gold Zimbabwe can produce. It is about the people whose land, safety, livelihoods and dignity are being sacrificed in the pursuit of mineral wealth.
Join the conversation. Demand accountability. Put communities before profit.

We cannot stay silent while families live next to cyanide tanks. People fear for their water, their health, their children.
Communities have a right to a clean, safe environment.
@MinistryMines @EMAeep - Protect the people, not the polluters
VALLEY OF KINGS UNDER THREAT
How does an unlicensed gold processing plant, operating cyanidation tanks, establish itself in a residential community while the authorities look the other way? In Mutareโs Valley of Kings, this is not an allegation. The cyanidation tanks have been witnessed and documented through photographs and video, yet residents are left living in fear of potential contamination of their environment and water sources.
Where are the environmental regulators? Where is the mining inspectorate? How does an operation of this scale take root without decisive intervention from the authorities mandated to protect communities?
This is a shocking failure of regulatory oversight and public responsibility. Communities should not have to beg for protection while potentially dangerous mining operations proceed unchecked.
When authorities turn a blind eye to visible violations, who protects the people? Mining cannot be allowed to operate above the law.

On the 28th of October 2026, the Zimbabwe Council of Churches (ZCC) concluded a two day rice distribution activity, with hundreds of vulnerable returnee households receiving the rice in Chiredzi district. On the first day, distributions focused on Mwenezi district
The rice was received from the Chinese government as part of ongoing humanitarian response efforts following the recent migration crisis in South Africa. A part of the 20 metric tonnes rice donation, was pre-positioned at the Beitbridge Reception Centre to support vulnerable returnees upon their arrival at the centre.
ZCC greatly appreciates the generous support and solidarity of the Chinese Embassy, Diakonia, The South African Council of Churches, and Global Ministries.
