Why do I refer to every child's mother as "Mum" in physio... and never use "Mum" in any other context in life😅 ... "Attended with Mum who expressed concerns...". "Phoned Mum and left message"

Learning all about interpreting hand/wrist xrays for the next 3 days with #BAHT #handtherapy
An excerpt from my talk last night at our team education night on management of acute hand/finger injuries. Trying to increase awareness and get some referrals into Hand Therapy
Apparently yesterday was #WorldPhysiotherapyDay and our lovely Clinical Lead (a Doctor) knew this 😍 small gestures are the best gestures

How often does rehab & rehab research look for that ONE perfect exercise that hits the KEY mediator/variable for recovery, such as strength or motor control?
Answer…..A lot!
Should rehab be viewed more like eating a balanced diet?

Being an MSK Clinician is a really easy job to do badly and a really difficult job to do well.
Is it just me or is everyone with hand pain told "Squeeze a ball" and anyone who has foot pain told "roll a ball under your foot"??
Anyone else think this looks like a tiny avulsion, xray report is normal 🤔 haven't seen the patient yet, just curious @halseyhands1 @BucksHandExpert @iangattphysio

Our body as a machine view:
• Wear & tear.
• Has to be "fixed".
• Needs alignment.
• Pain means damage.
I wonder how humans viewed our bodies before the industrial revolution.
Likely,
• We can adapt, grow & change.
• Asymmetry is normal.
• Needs caring for.
Custom made splints more effective for mallet injures #handtherapy
Mallet injuries: I don’t think hand therapists will be surprised to reads that stack splints had a higher risk of failure than custom made ones. Other risk factors for failure were increasing age and a tendinous injury. jhsgo.org/article/S2589-5141…
Mcp blocking splint for #triggerfinger. No amazing research evidence for it but relatively cheap and it's non invasive. Steroid injections are very effective but I'm all for avoiding steroids if we can! #handtherapy
As a new grad I dreaded the situations where a patient asked me something and inside I was screaming "I don't know!!!" but I thought it would totally undermine me if I didn't have some sort of an answer. Now I openly say "I don't know" and have never had a negative reaction to it
Opening the doors to our first Hand Therapy clinic in September. Ireland has very few of these clinics and I think the potential is huge!
I have @BhrHand to thank for being my first supervisors in 2019 and even offering advice across the pond on how to get set up here💛
