You are so kind. It wasn't complicated back then & isn't complicated now. We don't teach people the Bible because we love the Bible. We teach people the Bible because we love people. All we have to do is do the latter as best as the charis granted to us allows.

"... the absolute destruction we felt at JF’s betrayal." That's heartbreaking. It makes me so cross at those who repeatedly minimised Jonathan Fletcher’s abuse because 'it wasn't as bad as' wasn't 'criminal', '...needed to be seen in context' etc when it was so 'destructive'.
Seems right to repost this as it was the first time I heard a married couple articulate the absolute destruction we felt at JF’s betrayal.
Thank you again @matt_redman and Beth Redman for your bravery, truth and light.

Today sees the release of ‘Let There Be Light’ - a documentary exploring the pattern of harmful behaviours experienced under the leadership of Mike Pilavachi, a prominent figure in the UK Church. Our hope is for this film to be something of a care-package for the hurting, at the same time asking how we might become a healthier Church in the future. We know it won’t serve everyone, but we pray it will help some.
We tell our story to shine light and help validate other’s experiences. It would have been much easier to say nothing - but a culture of silence up until now has been a significant force. Other voices speaking into this documentary are Dr Diane Langberg (recognised for her 50 years of clinical work with trauma victims), Dr Chi-Chi Obuaya (a respected London Harley Street consultant psychiatrist) and Dr Amy Orr-Ewing (a regarded UK theologian with a passion to advocate for survivors of abuse.) The film also points to some key organisations who provide support in this area and also safeguarding resources for churches.
While speaking on a painful subject it’s also important to acknowledge all of the pastors out there faithfully loving those that God has entrusted to them.
This is a story Beth and I chose to tell. Our prayer is for the healing of yesterday’s wounds and a brighter, safer Church tomorrow.
Let there be Light.

I'm delighted to see that these two posts have been read over 3,000 times on the @AnglicanFutures site alone. The subject is stomach turning but of vital importance. To prevent future harm #fletcherculture must be eradicated. anglicanfutures.org/post/fle…

And the other wise leaders Ed, Rachel, Mars, Will, Tim B, Clare - grateful for them all 🙏

Survivors need public allies. For a whole host of the best reasons many people simply cannot do/be that. Which means there is a great onus on those who are sufficiently privileged not to walk by on the other side. The cost is high but the privilege more than worth it.
2020's a long time ago, but I stand by almost every word of this off the cuff speech (tx to @thirtyoneeight for the pledge a friend sent that AM). 1 correction swap "in judgement" "we'll all be judged".
Still relevant. Still grateful 4 God's mercy. share.google/Kif6UBfTLOJdTyC…

I honour and respect you Andy for the bravery and integrity you have shown here. In a few words you speak so much truth.
More I could add. But simply . Every blessing to you & yr family.

No problem - I think the Rector in question was apologising for misjudging Fletcher's character - for encouraging people to trust him and look up to him.

I don't know how much you know about the Fletcher case - he was known to be a bully for years (hence why no one challenged him). You may underestimate the cost those who have spoken up /apologised have paid. No one wants performative apologies - true repentance is different.

Imo anyone who sat under his damaging and warped teaching on family and marriage. But our first thoughts and care should be with the survivors and families who have been ignored and belittled for so long by the CE world.
Our gut instinct was right. Something was terribly wrong.

So often in the modern world we develop hard hearts and soft feet. God wants the exact opposite. Soft hearts and hard feet.

I suspect you were basically powerless because there was no one you could go to who would support you in breaking the cartel/omerta. That and the pretence that its all holy is what is so destructive. I'm so sorry you & Anna were put to the sword.

Another ripple effect of his monstrous abuse is the long term psychological damage to countless women and families involved. It will take a lifetime to recover.

Often abusers also groom & manipulate the 'bystanders' around them, who are also morally injured. It takes strength & courage to admit that, as a survivor apologies like this mean a lot.

I can't imagine how much courage pressing send on those messages took. Praying for you. @AndyByfield_22.

The irony is that saying sorry is what Christian leadership should look like. Couldn’t be prouder of @AndyByfield_22 but so sad that it was impossible for us to continue.

This might help readers recognise what an appallingly tone-deaf and potentially re-abusive statement this is anglicanfutures.org/post/hav…

This is excoriating, but rightly so. Most of all survivors, but many others too, gave so much at deep personal cost to the @thirtyoneeight review into Jonathan Fletcher, Emmanuel, Wimbledon and #fletcherculture. They all deserve so much better than this. anglicanfutures.org/post/hav…

It is extremely depressing that after expecting survivors to share their stories, spending months of people's time and more than £100k on a lessons learned review, Emmanuel Church Wimbledon can put out such an appalling statement - Here are 10 free lessons anglicanfutures.org/post/hav…
