I got this message from a senior police officer following my request for a statement in the Senate on the welfare of police officers in Kenya.
βI have been asking myself: if a DCI office at the sub-county level receives less than KSh 200,000/- in AIE funds over a period of three months, our salaries, fuel, and motor vehicle maintenance then where does the rest of the billions allocated annually to the police service go?
This is a genuine question about public finance and resource allocation. Officers on the ground are often expected to deliver results with extremely limited operational funds, yet the police service receives a substantial budget every year. Greater transparency on how these funds are distributed from headquarters to operational units would help build public confidence and improve accountability.
Even some sub counties have no vehicles and have as few as four officers and no AIEs.β
