Is this not the reason partnership exist ??
How can just the man earning 150k alone run the affairs of the house..
I'm not against anyone earning 150k and deciding to get married. Love is valid and everyone has a choice to love and marry. However, being realistic is my brand and I will be very honest as much as I can. With the way Nigeria is today, going ahead to marry on 150k salary is almost a "death sentence".
It's not about being a gold digger or materialistic. It's just maths. Let's break down the 150k salary 😢 😭!
First and foremost, rent is expensive. If you are in any of our metropolitan cities like Lagos, Abuja or Port Harcourt, a decent self-contain apartment in a manageable area is between 500k to 700k per year. That's like 45k-60k every month you must remove, whether you like it or not. Let's even manage it and say you pay 40k monthly for rent.
As regards food, one bag of rice is 85k. Beans is almost the same. A crate of egg is #5,500. Oil, stew, gas. That means as a family of two, eating very modestly at home, you will spend nothing less than 60k-70k on food in a month. Be informed that this calculation remains valid if and only if you don't eat out; no shawarma, no parfait or junk.
Fuel is #1350 per litre. Even if you use Keke or danfo, your movement to work and back, plus your wife's movement, is easily 30k-40k in a month.
NEPA & Data & Light: Prepaid meter is another 15k-20k monthly depending on the band. Data for two people, let's say 50k per month.
Wallahi, before you even talk about soap, toiletries, airtime, emergency etc, you have already finished 150k. You have spent 155k and you have not bought clothes, you have not entertained visitors, you have not paid offering in church, you have not done giveaway for naming, you have not bought drugs when one person has headache.
Now, put a wife inside that house and then, put pregnancy inside that equation. Antenatal alone will finish you. Hospital bills, baby things, feeding. Where will it come from?
The personal runnings they don't tell you in marriage counseling will now start to kill you mentally. Your wife wants to make hair that's 15k minimum. Your boxers have torn and you need to buy new ones. Your mother calls that she needs 5k. Your father-in-law's burial is next week and you are expected to show up. Your friend is doing wedding. You are invited. Aso-ebi 30k. You will say no? Every no will look like you are stingy, but na because money no dey. Who you won tell?
That is how small fights start because you are stressed. She asks for money for soup, you snap because you are calculating inside your head. She feels you don't care. You feel she doesn't understand. Love starts to turn into endurance. Not because you don't love each other, but because poverty is a very loud noise. It drowns love.
150k in 2015 was okay. In 2026, it will not even cover basics. It is survival, not living. You will be alive, but you will be borrowing to eat before month ends. You will be one emergency away from begging.
Does this mean you shouldn't marry? No. However, it means you need a plan that is bigger than love. You need at least 250k upwards combined income to even breathe small. Husband 150k, wife 100k, together 250k; you can manage or you have a solid side hustle that gives you extra 1000k-150k consistently. You may have zero rent because family house covers you too.
Woo, please have a honest conversation with your partner. Don't marry someone who thinks 150k per month is enough to live in Lekki or Ikoyi and do soft life. Marry someone who understands budgeting, who can manage, grow and wait and who is also ready to hustle with you.
At the end of the day, na God dey provide ooo. Meanwhile, our God provides through sense, planning, and work. He will not come down to pay your rent or feed your family.
Marry for love, but enter marriage with sense and with extra income. Love will keep you together, but money will keep you from fighting every day. This generation women no de hear anything oo! Ti o ba sowo, won ma japa!!

I’ve been living abroad for over 5 years, at least there are more than 100 people here that have my WhatsApp number & they can confirm what I’m saying, it’s still my +234….. till date, I’ve never in my life have any other WhatsApp detail that belongs to me that differs from my Naija line, my Europe number has never make it to WhatsApp.
Bros, this is “Whatsapp number classism” & I never thought this is possible by any human in this life.
Eyin tun ni Igberaga yato oooo.
There is this guy in my church who came to me to ask for my number about two weeks ago because he needed me to get something done for him. I punched my number onto his phone and I asked him to call or text me so I can be able to get his number too. By the time I got home, I saw a WhatsApp message from a 234 number, and he said that was his number. I just ignored him. I didn't even reply and I'd never save that number into my contact list.
Dude has been in the UK for four years now and he is still giving his Nigerian number to people in the UK with him. Or is it because I'm a Nigerian like him that he was texting me with his 234 WhatsApp number? I know he would not do that if it was a Brit that he had exchanged a contact with. Except for my very close friends and family members, I don't entertain any 234 messages on my 447 line. Let 234 messages be directed to my 234 number, biko.
