“Offering buyouts” is a funny way for Microsoft to say that it’s laying off 27% of its workforce
The Kobeissi Letter
@KobeissiLetter5h
BREAKING: Microsoft, $MSFT, is offering buyouts to 60,000 workers as part of the company’s efforts to cut costs amid AI adoption, per Bloomberg. Personnel on select teams in the US, Canada, India, and the UK at a vice president level and below will be eligible. This reflects ~27% of Microsoft's total workforce.

Doris can lend her own campaign nearly $7 million while families in CD7 are choosing between rent & groceries. I don’t have that luxury. Doris has no idea the choices families have to make in this economy & is deeply out of touch w/ those of us living paycheck to paycheck.
Major update in the California 7th race: Rep. Doris Matsui loaned her campaign an additional $1,500,000, bringing her self-funding total to nearly $7,000,000. She is facing off against Mai Vang, a Sacramento city council member who took the Political Integrity Pledge and gets an A- on the Integrity Index. Rep. Matsui gets an F on the Integrity Index and has received over $800,000 in corporate contributions since 2024. Receipts here: matsuiforcalifornia.com

Another reason why a data center moratorium is needed now! ⤵️
In the rush to build data centers, companies are starting to use their own off grid gas generators. This results in much higher emissions – 60% to 80% – compared with using their local electricity grid and risks locking in longer-term fossil dependence.

Both top-shelf reporting and top officials in the Trump administration, including Trump himself, have said that Musk made this decision on his own. That would be treason. prospect.org/?p=146689

Most Data Centres being built now will become White Elephants. A "white elephant" is a vast building that is too expensive to complete or to maintain, providing little to no financial return. They are eventually abandoned because they're too expensive to repurpose or destroy.

There's going to be a lot of "white elephant" data centres - as the financing dries up and investors cut and run - some buildings half finished, some never turned on.

Three data centers near the New Mexico-Texas border will emit millions of tons of greenhouse gas emissions once fully built. Because there's no single federal regulation governing emissions, regulators have largely considered their impacts separately. propublica.org/article/data-…

Sen. Susan Collins helped steer millions in federal defense contracts to Navatek, whose CEO illegally funneled thousands of dollars to her campaign. The FBI sought to launch a probe and was eyeing Collins and other lawmakers. Then Trump gutted the unit in charge. THREAD 🧵

> Scott’s “landmark AI bill” is supposed to be enforced for incidents that resulted in more than 50 deaths where AI was involved in the decision-making process. > Over 150 people died (120 children) in the Minab bombing, which Anthropic said their models were used in. > There’s no sign of any enforcement in this incident by Scott’s bill. > SB 53, the “Transparency in Frontier Artificial Intelligence Act”, does not require public incident-level reporting. And there’s no requirement for the government to provide records upon request. The public would never know if it’s actually enforced. > The bill also has a carveout for “lawful federal activity”. Like war. Or bombing a school. Scott’s AI transparency bill literally does nothing.
