The appointment of @Lana_Nusseibeh as UN Secretary-General would raise very serious questions about the UN’s credibility, impartiality and commitment to international law. The UAE has played a deeply troubling role in supporting Morocco’s illegal occupation of Western Sahara. By opening a consulate in occupied Laayoune, Abu Dhabi has sought to legitimise Morocco’s its brutal occupation and create a fait accompli in defiance of the Sahrawi people’s inalienable right to self-determination. Western Sahara remains on the UN list of Non-Self-Governing Territories, and its decolonisation remains unfinished. How could a senior representative of a state actively supporting one party’s territorial ambitions be entrusted with leading an organisation responsible for facilitating a just, impartial and lawful solution? The UAE’s deeply controversial and negative involvement in Sudan, Libya and the Sahel raises further serious concerns. Its support for armed groups, particularly the RSF in Sudan, and its destabilising regional interventions cannot simply be brushed aside. The UN Secretary-General must be independent, impartial and unwavering in defending the UN Charter, international legality, human rights and the right of peoples to self-determination. The UN needs a Secretary-General who defends international law, not one whose diplomatic record is associated with defending occupation, legitimising territorial conquest or shielding destabilising interventions. @Lana_Nusseibeh’s candidacy deserves serious scrutiny, not diplomatic indulgence.
