Last Saturday, I told my father’s cat to stop scratching the wardrobe.
Dad had been dead for six weeks. I was trying to clear his bedroom before the house went on the market.
The cat had been living with me since the funeral. I brought him along when I spent the day packing, thinking he might prefer somewhere familiar.
Every time, he went straight to Dad’s room.
He ignored the empty bed and the chair by the window. He sat in front of the wardrobe, scratching the door and crying.
I moved him away. He went back.
I checked his water, offered him food, and opened the curtains.
Nothing helped.
By that weekend, I was tired of making decisions about every object Dad had owned.
Sell the dresser. Donate the clothes. Keep the photographs.
I’d spent twenty minutes holding a chipped mug because I remembered him drinking from it. After that, I started working faster.
The cat kept scratching.
“Give me a minute,” I said, more sharply than I needed to.
I wondered whether a mouse had got into the wardrobe. The house had been empty, and there were gaps behind the shelves.
I finally put the packing tape down and opened the door.
He stopped crying immediately.

Help us show our black cats some love this #NationalBlackCatDay! Meet Burton, Besom, Hawk & Maya. 🖤
Did you know black cats wait longer to be adopted due to people believing they are "bad luck" or not as photogenic?

The Queen is in! 👑 Queenie's caregivers estimate that she is an incredible 20+ years old!
We brought this regal senior lady in for some medical treatment, and we're keeping a close eye on her as she recovers. She's already playing with toys again, which is a great sign!
Community cats can truly live long and healthy lives, and Queenie's story is proof. In her case, our supporters like you are an important part of the journey. Thank you for helping us provide her with medical care and create access to care resources to protect cats and kittens! 💙🐈

We love that glance in the trap before the 'Return' of Trap-Neuter-Return (#TNR)! In just a few minutes, they'll be back in their outdoor homes living the full, healthy lives they deserve.🐈
TNR pro tip: ALWAYS line the bottom of traps. A layer of newspaper is a great choice, but cardboard and magnetic vent covers work well, too. Make sure traps are always fully covered to help cats stay calm and feel safe.

There's a new October chill in the air! 🍂 Now is the best time to brush up on cold-weather care best practices for community cats!
#1 on the list: provide an outdoor shelter (and insulate with STRAW, not hay!)

A man who tortured cats & then raised money from people who believed they were helping sick animals has received Virginia’s strongest ever animal abuse sentence: 15 years in prison. One survivor, Sisu, is now safe & loved. Thank you to all who signed. ladyfreethinker.org/petition…

Cruelty to cats must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. A strong penalty reflects the severity of the crime, delivers justice for the victim, and sends a clear message that no act of animal cruelty will be tolerated.
Alley Cat Allies sent a letter of gratitude to the prosecutor's office responsible for the record sentence of Rodney Travis Jr. in Virginia: 15 years in prison for deadly cruelty to multiple cats.
More than that, we offered our assistance with future animal cruelty cases at no cost. We have done the same across the nation. Strong sentences like these should be the norm, not the exception, for the sake of cats' well-being and us all. The link between violence toward animals and violence toward humans is well established.

We’re a very special bonded pair looking for a loving forever home together. As you can see, Derek and I make a great team. In fact, one of Derek’s favourite places to sit is right on my back. I don’t mind one bit, I make a pretty comfy chair if I do say so myself! 💚
I’m a friendly, affectionate Labrador who loves being around people and soaking up all the fuss and cuddles I can get. Derek is 5 years old and he’s my best friend; we’re hoping to find a family who’ll welcome us both with open arms. If that family happens to have snacks handy too, well, we certainly wouldn’t complain! 🦴😋
Our ideal home would be with children aged 14 and over. I’m a lovely boy, but I can get a little enthusiastic and bouncy when I’m excited, and sometimes I forget just how big I am! We enjoy meeting other dogs out on our walks, but we’d prefer to be the only dogs in the home so we can continue being each other’s favourite companion.
We could happily live with dog-savvy cats who have experience living alongside dogs. We’d also love a secure garden where we can potter about, stretch our legs, and enjoy a spot of sunbathing whenever the British weather allows it! ☀️
Once we’ve settled into our new home, we could be left for a couple of hours at a time. Having each other around means we’re never short of company.
If you’re looking for two loyal, loving companions who will fill your home with fun, friendship, and plenty of cuddles, then we could be the perfect pair for you.
