In this second article of my series on the upcoming American midterm elections, I wanted to broaden the discussion beyond whether there will be a Blue Wave, or how badly Republicans may—or may not—lose.
Instead, I wanted to focus on the more consequential question: what will the result actually tell us about the American electorate?
A Democratic victory may tell us quite clearly whom voters want to punish. It may tell us much less clearly whom they trust, what they want instead, and where they want the country to go.

The United States attacked Iran's Qeshm Island on Monday as part of a series of limited strikes Washington has secretly carried out against Iran in recent weeks, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing US officials.
Some US officials described the strikes as defensive and aimed at preventing Iran from having the freedom to attack commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. Explosions were reported around Qeshm Island on Monday, according to Iranian state media.
Unlike earlier in the war, the United States has not publicly announced the attacks. One US official told the Journal that Washington has deliberately kept the campaign quiet to avoid signaling an intention to resume major combat operations.
Qeshm, at the mouth of the Strait of Hormuz, is home to a large underground missile site, a naval base and a major desalination plant, according to the Journal. The United States previously targeted the island during earlier rounds of fighting.
The previously undisclosed strikes come as President Donald Trump has played down the prospect of renewed large-scale fighting with Iran after Tuesday's midterm elections.
“We had a war with Iran. We won,” Trump told reporters Monday. “I don’t know if you even call it a war because we haven’t been doing any fighting for months.”
Asked Monday whether he was considering striking Iran after the midterms, Trump said “no,” although administration officials told the Journal that he was still weighing his options.

Iran’s exchange of messages with the United States is continuing, and Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi’s visit to Doha was aimed at facilitating talks between Tehran and the Qatari mediator, the foreign ministry spokesman said on Monday.
Esmaeil Baghaei said the issues remained complex and that Iran had conveyed what it considered necessary to Washington.
“The ball is in the US court,” he said, adding that the United States now had to decide.
He said no final agreement could be reached and the Strait of Hormuz could not reopen until the US naval blockade ended and Iran’s “legitimate demands” were implemented.
Baghaei described compressing Tehran’s seven-day proposal into a two-day process as a sign of Iran’s goodwill.

Some of us have been briefed on the war plan. And while I cannot disclose any details, I can say this: the plan is insane. It will not achieve objectives and will set off a new cycle of escalation.

Stunning piece about yet another old-guard, high-level, billionaire supporter of Israel who has lost faith in it - and in Netanyahu.
"Ronald Lauder has never lived in Israel. But in the past year the Jewish billionaire, who serves as president of the World Jewish Congress, has given up his remaining properties in the country, a sign of the deep shift in his views of its future. A deep sense of disgust appears on his face as he recounts this. "I've sold my apartment in Tel Aviv, I gave my home in Be'er Sheva to the Jewish National Fund, of which I'm also the chairman. I basically cut my ties there. Because it has become so…," Lauder grimaces, making a gesture of vomiting.
He goes on to blame Israel for failing to make peace, explaining that Israel actually didn't want peace:
"I realized at the end of the day that Israel really didn't want peace, but they wanted dominance. And I walked away from it."
"You've lost the Democratic Party, and you're losing the Republican Party. And it's all because of foolishness on your part. I want to tell Israelis, 'Shame on you! Shame on all of you. Your fathers and your grandfathers fought for this place, and you're losing it because of foolishness. Period.'"
I think this reflects the view of many who fought to establish Israel/supported its creation, but at the same time believed in peace. Perhaps an unjust peace, clearly a peace on Israel's terms - but a peace nonetheless.
But Israel has long swapped dominance and control for peace, and it has taken quite some time for many of its original supporters and champions to realize it - and admit to themselves the direction Israel actually is going in.

b) Ancak İsrail’in Arap partileri dışlamayı öncelemesi, yalnızca yeni bir siyasi istikrarsızlık sürecini beraberinde getirmeyecektir.
With over 66% of votes counted in Israel's election, Netanyahu's bloc holds 54 seats, short of the 61 needed for a majority. The opposition parties hold a combined 66 seats after the United Arab List gained two, bringing its total to six. Likud remains the largest party with 27 seats.

Let’s go through the peace deals Zelenskyy rejected.
• Istanbul agreement, 2022
Ukraine needed to refuse NATO accession, reduce the army, Russia would withdraw from the Kyiv reg., possibly from the Kharkiv, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia regions. At that point the scale of destruction was still limited and the number of dead was far lower. In April 2022 Zelenskyy declined the deal.
• End of 2022
Russian forces withdrew from part of the Kherson region. Zelenskyy traveled to meet Biden and, acc. to my sources, later confirmed by Mr. Blinken in the New York Times, persuaded the WH to continue the war. The precise terms of any proposed deal remain unknown, but sources indicate there was readiness to declare at least a ceasefire.
• Beginning of 2023
Through unofficial channels between the United States and Russia, an understanding took shape: Putin agreed to withdraw to the borders that existed before the full-scale invasion—freeing nearly everything conquered that year—in exchange for Ukraine’s refusal of NATO accession and recognition of Crimea as Russian. Zelenskyy and Yermak refused. Since then nearly a million people have been killed or wounded, several million have become refugees, parts of the Kharkiv, Sumy, and Dnipropetrovsk regions have been occupied, more of Zaporizhzhia has been taken, Kherson lies in ruins, the Chernihiv and Sumy regions face constant shelling, Kyiv itself has become almost a front-line city, the energy system has been destroyed, businesses cannot operate, exports have stalled, and the country is degrading.
• July 2024
An arrangement that began with an energy ceasefire, modeled on the Istanbul understandings and mediated through the Middle East. While negotiations were under way, Zelenskyy also planned the Kursk operation, which ultimately disrupted all the arrangements.
• March 2025
After the Oval Office clash between Trump and Zelenskyy, European leaders gathered in London in early March. The British government stated that a number of options were on the table and that Ukraine had to choose. As always, nothing came of it.
Whether Putin was prepared each time to implement any agreements remains unknown, yet on several occasions he carried out what he had promised. Does this remove his responsibility for the deaths, the horrors, and the destruction in Ukraine? No.
But the country is degrading, the state apparatus is degrading, and corruption finishes what Putin’s missiles, drones, and bombs did not destroy. Inhumanity has effectively become a state strategy and a national ideology promoted at every turn.
Ukraine simply cannot win this way—there are neither economic, nor demographic, nor any other grounds for it. Therefore, if Zelenskyy does not agree to a deal with realistic terms now, Ukraine will be forced to capitulate. And that is deeply alarming, because it can actually cost the country its independence and sovereignty.

Israel's Channel 12 Reporting (English translation of their report:)
Breaking news in this edition
An unprecedented confrontation between the Chief of Staff and the Prime Minister has reached a critical—or perhaps disastrous—turning point over the last 24 hours.
At the heart of the matter: the Iranian issue.
There is concern on the part of [Chief of Staff] Zamir that Netanyahu and the political leadership might trigger a scenario of miscalculation vis-à-vis Iran, just ahead of the elections.
A defense official states that the action in question could lead to a rapid confrontation with Iran at a highly sensitive and dramatic moment, potentially resulting in a miscalculation.
Sources familiar with the details indicate that the military leadership fears an attempt to exploit the Iranian issue for political gain—a claim that political figures deny, labeling it an outright lie.
Regardless, two sources tell me that the situation has escalated to the point where, during a visit to the Palmachim Airbase today, the atmosphere in the discussion was extremely tense.
In recent days, Zamir received a directive from the political leadership but requested an in-depth discussion before taking any action.
He also demanded formal, signed legal authorization from the political echelon for the proposed move.
A senior defense official remarked: "History will not forget the role Zamir has played here over the last few days."
In short: an exceptionally intense confrontation between Zamir and Netanyahu regarding the Iranian issue, occurring just before the elections.
It should be noted: all details in this report have been approved by the Military Censor.

Gadi Eizenkot, this evening, shortly after the reports, approved by Israeli censorship, that Chief of Staff Zamir has been standing firm andblocking Netanyahu from intentionally provoking a war before the elections.
"Netanyahu, my eyes are on you.
The man on whose watch the greatest disaster in the nation’s history occurred refuses to understand that Israel’s security is not a political bargaining chip, the lives of Israeli citizens and IDF soldiers are not abandoned property, and the State of Israel is not his private property.
I have full confidence in Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir and the IDF commanders who act out of professional responsibility and absolute commitment to the state's security. We will not allow the IDF to be turned into a tool in Netanyahu’s survival campaign.
I warn Netanyahu: Do not dare to place your political interests above the security of the state.
Holding the elections on schedule and completing the democratic process is a central component of Israel's national resilience. We will not allow you to jeopardize Israel’s future in order to preserve your rule.
In two days, the citizens of Israel will put an end to the reign of recklessness and restore responsibility, statesmanship, and Israel’s security.
I give my word.

NYT: The U.S. and Israeli militaries have developed specific plans for renewed strikes against Iran after the American midterm elections, according to U.S. officials and other people briefed on the deliberations. As planning for a short but intensive operation progresses, the U.S. and Israeli militaries have stepped up exercises, flying planes over Iraq to practice strike maneuvers. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel this week to discuss new strikes, U.S. officials said.
