Dan Lanning explains the leadership trait that separated Nick Saban and Kirby Smart from everyone else: “Coach Saban was the definition of consistency. At times, you almost felt like you were dealing with a robot because of how methodical he was in his approach.” “He just didn’t get flustered.” “The sun was going to come up tomorrow at 7:00 a.m. in Tuscaloosa, and Nick Saban was going to be in the office at 7:30 eating the same snack before the same staff meeting.” “You got to see that level of consistency every single day.” “You also got to watch his decision-making process: ‘We’ve got to fix this. How are we going to make it better?’” “I always felt like he and Kirby Smart both didn’t care who you were. If you had some sort of value you could add to the program, they wanted to know what you knew.” “If you were a janitor in the corner of the room and had a blitz package that was going to be good against that team, he wanted to see it.” “It didn’t matter who the person was. If you could bring value to the organization, he wanted to tap into it.”
