Two years ago today, I was awarded my doctorate after successfully completing my viva. Nearly four years of research, writing, and perseverance led to that moment. Looking back, I'm incredibly proud of the journey and all that it took to get there. ⬇️

The conversations in the Skill(ful) Facilitator Lab (SFL) have been incredibly thought-provoking and practical, helping coaches think more critically about the learning environments they create and how to design movement problems that help athletes develop more adaptable skill.

I've been asked a few times about advice for how to grow as a coach - resources, steps, habits, etc. The #1 thing that changed my coaching craft? Investing 💰 💴 💵 ! Once I spent dollars from my bank account that I had earned from lessons, camps and coaching, my craft took the next step. Show up, take notes, apply knowledge, come prepared, ask questions. All things I had done, but now there was a new level because I was investing my hard earned cash. Many balk as soon as a price tag is attached to things like this. But the truth is, you get what you pay for. Free resources often lack depth and the ability to engage deeply. Cheap food lacks nutrition. More expensive, wholesome food is better for you. Same with coaching resources. I encourage anyone reading this to set aside a few months worth of cash to check out the Skill(ful) Facilitator Lab and decide for yourself.
Fields grow through its people & the interactions between them! If you want to become the best sporting practitioner you can be, consider joining us at the Skill(ful) Facilitator Lab today! skool.com/skillful-facilitat…

In this thread, Philip dives into an important idea that our own @TylerYearby & @MovementMiyagi have frequently spoken about over the years: slices of the game. Check out a few journal articles diving in deeper here: frontiersin.org/journals/spo… tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.…
One of the key skills in practice design is being able to take a complex game and create a simpler version without losing what makes it the game. Think about it as taking a slice of the game Here are 5 steps I use when designing these activities 👇

I also explored the ideas behind slices of the game in last week’s newsletter which featured a brilliant paper by @MovementMiyagi, @TylerYearby & Keith Davids as well as a podcast snip by Stuart Armstrong & Ian Renshaw mrtenniscoach.substack.com/p…

What an incredible four days in Colorado! We tackled several trails on different days, each bringing its own mix of changing and unpredictable weather. What better way to finish the trip than with my first 14er—Grays Peak!

One year ago today, Tyler Yearby, Rob Gray, and I teamed up to publish a one-of-a-kind resource titled Enhancing Skill in American Football. This book was really the first of its kind in many ways as it brought a new lens for viewing the skilled movement behavior that emerges on the gridiron for those working in various roles within American football. Since then, it's been especially humbling to hear from coaches across levels of the game as to the degree that the ideas resonated for them and enabled them to make significant changes to their practice environments -- many of those changes bringing the manifestation of enhanced skill out on the field this fall for the players they work with. If you still haven't picked up Enhancing Skill in American Football, you can find it on Amazon today!
