Pope Leo XIV celebrated Mass at the Verano Cemetery in Rome on the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed, and recalled that our bond with the dead is not broken but transformed in our faith in Christ.
"We wish to pray now for those who have recently lost a loved one, especially those whose loved ones have been torn from them by the senseless violence of war. May the tears of so many mothers, so many children, and so many elderly people touch the consciences of those who have the power to silence the weapons!"

My heart aches for the children, parents, and families of Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon. No family should ever have to experience such fear and heartbreak. Please know that you are not alone. I hold you close in prayer, and the Church stands with you in this time of sorrow. We entrust those who have died to the loving mercy of Jesus Christ. May He embrace the grieving families and bring comfort to all who are suffering.

On his third day in hospital, Pope Leo XIV’s doctors say his chest X-ray in the morning shows “good recovery of the lung that underwent surgery.”
The Pope carried his daily activities independently and continues a full range of physiotherapy, as his postoperative recovery progresses normally.

Dr. Luigi Carbone and Professor Stefano Margaritora have provided the following update on the Pope’s postoperative recovery:
This morning, the Holy Father underwent the blood tests and chest X-ray scheduled after surgery. The results confirm that his postoperative recovery is progressing normally: the values are within the expected range for the type of operation performed.
The Holy Father has undergone respiratory physiotherapy and has begun walking around his room. He has resumed eating normally and had breakfast and lunch.
His recovery is proceeding as expected.

I ask Catholics throughout Western Oregon and all people of good will to join me in praying for the full recovery of Pope Leo XIV following his surgery for lung cancer.
At a time when war, division and uncertainty weigh heavily on people around the world, the Holy Father’s calls for peace, dialogue and respect for the dignity of every person offer a much-needed message of hope to people everywhere.

Pope Leo XIV underwent thoracic surgery at Gemelli Hospital on Tuesday afternoon, as planned, according to a statement from Dr. Luigi Carbone and Professor Stefano Margaritora released by the Holy See Press Office.
The surgeons removed the lower lobe of the Pope’s right lung, and tissue examined during the operation confirmed the diagnosis of “lung adenocarcinoma,” as suspected from tests conducted beforehand.
The Pope was in the operating room approximately three hours, while the operation itself lasted about 90 minutes. The doctors said it was successful and there were no complications.
Pope Leo awoke normally after surgery and, following a brief period of observation, returned to his room on the hospital’s 10th floor, according to the statement.

Dear friends, during some recent medical examinations, the doctors found a small, localized nodule in my lung. It was detected at a very early stage and is well-localized. The doctors believe that it is best to intervene, so, following their advice, I have decided to undergo surgery to remove it. The operation is already scheduled to take place in the coming days. I thank you for your spiritual closeness and entrust myself to your prayers.

The death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person. The common good can be safeguarded and the requirements of justice can be met without recourse to capital punishment: effective systems of detention have been developed that protect citizens while at the same time do not completely deprive those who are guilty of the possibility of redemption. #NoDeathPenalty

Today is the feast of St. John Henry Newman, a scholar, pastor, and convert who followed the truth with courage. I'm grateful to the @USCCB for sharing this video, in which I reflect on his witness and what it can teach us now. St. John Henry Newman, pray for us.

God has different ways and fresh ideas even for those who consider themselves to be first and believe they have earned what they have, that they deserved the results they have achieved. Instead, we all gain joy, wisdom and a better future when the law of love interrupts that of calculation, when the experience of mercy broadens that of merit, and when the gift of peace suspends rivalries and brings us closer together in gratitude. #GospelOfTheDay (Mt 20:1–16) vatican.va/content/leo-xiv/e…

Today is “Sea Sunday.” My thoughts go out to all sailors, fishermen and port workers around the world who, though marked by separation from their loved ones and sometimes by fear of the conflicts occur on the seas, sustain trade and the lives of many peoples through their patient and quiet labor.
