Some of those merchant ships were such bad rust buckets that just firing the main gun would break things near gun mount. Dad told me a few stories but I'm sure it had to effect their thinking every time they saw a tin can or flat top sail by. He was a Signalman and proud of it.

I never heard that before. They are forgotten by the country and I never understood that. There is a great website started by a WWII Navy Armed Guard. That's certainly a different way of framing the situation. My dad was in the "Armed Guard", an almost forgotten branch of the @USNavy and he was blown out of the water twice in WWII while on merchant ships. The rest of the Navy just sneered at the Armed Guard as not real Navy.

“A seafarer who sails into a war zone under state orders, on a ship that the enemy is trying to sink, has participated in that war. However, most countries still do not recognize that person as a veteran.” 🎯

xitter.cf/USMMWWII/status/211377… Sadly, scenes like this were all too common in 1942 of the US coasts. The U-boat war was taking a terrible toll on US shipping, and this is an example of just one of those ships lost.
The SS Tiger (sinking) and under tow by the tug Relief after being torpedoed by U-754 on April 1, 1942. Under tow near Cape Henry, VA. Tiger, originally built as a freighter, was torpedoed by the German submarine U-754 just after midnight on 1 April 1942, after she had reduced speed to pick up a pilot before entering Chesapeake Bay. She sank in shallow water during salvage efforts on 2 April 1942. shipscribe.com/usnaux/ww1/sh…

I’m gearing up for my last ship launch at NASSCO this weekend. The past 3 years has been a great ride, and I’m thankful to the shipyard for all the things I’ve learned here and the great people I’ve gotten to work with! I can’t think of a better way to end this chapter than helping send USNS Ruth Bader Ginsburg down the ways! More details next week on what’s coming next.

Could the stern section maintain power? If so, it may not have been too uncomfortable?
