People can have differences and nuanced takes on CJP but it is inexcusable to remain silent on the custody of Ashutosh and Saurav. This is an egregious violation of a citizen's liberty. Please speak up. If not on principle, than in self-interest, for this is setting a precedent.

Hello @DelhiPolice. You haven’t replied. Normally you would say this is fake news. So please say this is fake news, camera returned duly to owner, it was taken away my mistake. Waiting patiently Yours truly
Watch this video carefully. Hello @DelhiPolice, who is the cop who stole that camera? This belonged to Rajwinder and Lakhwinder Singh, two journalists from Punjab. They have still not gotten their camera back. Do you plan to give it back? Thievery

#BREAKING: Delhi Police arrests Saurav Das, Ashutosh Ranka, and Ajinkya Shinde at Parliament Street Police Station in today’s Jantar Mantar case. Trespass, bond violation, obstruction of public official’s duty, etc. They’ll be produced before the SCM Court in the morning. A possibility of Judicial Custody (JC) in the Tihar Jail is possible. They were not allowed to meet their lawyers till late at night. They were brought to Parliament Street PS at 3 AM in a private van. Despite these illegal actions, their spirits are high. @Cockroachisback

This is an exhaustive list of accounts from journalists who were either detained, assaulted, or had their equipment damaged by the Delhi Police. There are around 30 accounts in total, with direct quotes from almost all of them. thenewsminute.com/news/over-…

Manhandled, dragged, assaulted n misbehaved inside a police vehicle and dumped by the roadside - for the crime of speaking to the media. This is not merely an assault on an MP. It is an assault on democratic freedoms and the rule of law. More chillingly, it happened within hours of the Supreme Court issuing directions to safeguard peaceful protest and constitutional rights. I have written to the Hon’ble President of India @rashtrapatibhvn , the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha @VPIndia and the Chief Justice of India seeking urgent intervention and fixing accountability for the police personnel, and action on the question of parliamentary privilege. The Government cannot intimidate democracy into silence. It cannot substitute the force of the baton for the force of debate. And it shouldn’t expect the people to surrender their constitutional freedoms merely because those in power find dissent inconvenient. The strength of a democracy lies not in its capacity to suppress dissent, but in its ability to address it.

Protestors bundled into barricaded vans meant for criminals or undertrials. Reports of protestors being beaten inside vans, their phones taken away. The Delhi Police's repressive measures seem to be worsening, even as right-wing mobs are given a free hand.

Forget about everything—the metro, the train, the detention, etc. The court didn’t even once say that they were disturbed by the visuals of lawyers being dragged and manhandled. They didn’t even ask why the policemen or policewomen were not wearing their name badges. This was the bare minimum expected of the court.

This is the most horrific detention story you will hear today. At 8 PM, this bus stopped at a community centre in Pandwalan Khurd (see photo). Detainees fractured. Four minors present. Everyone barbarically beaten up. No lawyers allowed to enter. This is how we got here. ⬇️
🚨 URGENT LEGAL AID NEEDED 🚨 Lawyers please reach Kapashera PS now if around Protestors from CP picked up; cops seized their phones and deleted all protest videos; They have been detained and BRUTALLY BEATEN UP, totally crushed by the cops in the bus, this INCLUDES MINORS

Between the COVID lockdown and these random restrictions today, it is quite clear that our Constitution does not really need any provisions pertaining to the declaration of an Emergency. The state can do what it wants under normal criminal law, the courts cannot do anything.

So if you’re wondering why protesting needs permission, it’s because we have an executive-centric constitution that has been interpreted by a historically executive-centred court, to uphold colonial executive-centric laws as constitutionally compliant.

My colleague, one of India's best investigative reporters, Ayush Tiwari @sighyush has been detained by Delhi Police near ITO. He was not even at Jantar Mantar. He had his press card prominently displayed. He told the police many times he was a journalist. Despite that he was bundled into a van and taken away.
