The war in Ukraine is the greatest fight for sovereignty and freedom in the 21st century so far.
The tragedy of Trump changing sides and backing autocratic Russia instead of democratic Ukraine will go down in history as one of America's biggest foreign policy mistakes ever.

Not sure how it works where you are, but many PCI reports I see end with a somewhat self-absolving statement about "excellent procedural success", based largely on the operator’s visual estimate (i.e., the judgment is in the eye of the beholder). Well, this study shows that when success is defined using standardized criteria and assessed by a core lab, things look quite different and success rates drop substantially.

🔥 Sikorski brought the heat at the UN Security Council: “Sergey, tell your boss: enough is enough”
Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski addressed the Russian delegation directly, pointing to the gap in economic power between Russia, Poland, Europe and NATO.
“You have been trying to conquer Donbas for over 12 years and Kyiv for over four. You have been stopped by heroic Ukraine — a country whose GDP is one-tenth of Russia’s.
But Poland’s GDP is almost half of yours. Europe’s is 10 times bigger. NATO’s is 25 times bigger.
You can still kill a lot of people, but you cannot win. You can stop this imperial war of choice at any time. Don’t endanger Europe and the world any further. Stop destroying Russia’s future.”

Europe can choose to become a mosaic of competing nationalisms again — or finally become a true political community capable of acting.
The far right wants a Europe of nations, divided by borders, rivalries and competing interests.

I am bewildered, and not very impressed, by the visceral, naked, irrational hatred spat out by some defenders of Jason Arday. If a Cambridge professor is accused of being an unqualified charlatan, the accusation might be racially motivated. On the other hand it might not, depending on the evidence. The correct question to ask is not, ”What is the colour of his skin” but “Is it in fact true that he is an unqualified charlatan?” Please examine the evidence before leaping to the assumption of racism.
As for the idea that journalists “piled in on him” and “hounded him to his death”, most attacks were against Cambridge University. Jason himself was widely regarded as an unfortunate victim of foolish promotion way beyond his ability to cope. In appointing him to a professorship for which he was manifestly unqualified – in ludicrously describing him as “the best in the world” – certain senior members of the university showed a level of patronising condescension towards black people that could fairly be described as racism, while at the same time making him tragically vulnerable to such attacks as came his way.

I agree that there should have been due diligence, not least to protect Arday himself. Students were failed and academic standards were traduced. However, unless those who appointed Arday are literally sociopathic, they're going to have to live with this for the rest of their lives and I don't envy them that.
Of course their fate isn't as bad as that of Arday's loved ones, but there's quite a lot of middle ground between the extremist poles of 'the people who exposed his lies killed him and don't give a damn' and 'the people who appointed him killed him and don't give a toss.'
All suicides are complex and multi-causal. Attempting to reduce this tragedy to a simplistic narrative that supports the commentator's political viewpoint is unlikely to stop this happening again, which I'd have thought should be a compassionate, reasonable society's first concern.

🚨 𝗕𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗞𝗜𝗡𝗚: The Belgian federation has released a new statement:
"After learning through media reports of FIFA’s decision to lift the automatic suspension of player Balogun, the RBFA sent a letter to FIFA requesting a copy of the decision, an explanation of the process that had been followed, and setting out its position regarding the applicable regulations."
"As its only response, FIFA sent a letter to the RBFA stating that it considered this correspondence to constitute an appeal, that a judge had been appointed, and that the RBFA had only a few hours to complete that appeal. No information whatsoever was provided by FIFA."
"All of this occurred while FIFA simultaneously refused to respond to the RBFA’s legitimate requests."
"Furthermore, during the match coordination meeting, FIFA deliberately removed the section concerning the automatic suspension of players from its presentation. This topic had nonetheless been part of all such meetings before each of the previous four matches. The RBFA questioned FIFA, both orally and in writing, about the reasons for this change, yet once again received no response."
"To be clear, as of this moment, the RBFA has still not received any decision or any explanation from FIFA regarding this matter. It therefore has no alternative but to challenge the player's eligibility for the upcoming match."
"Regardless of the sporting outcome of this match, the RBFA is deeply saddened by the course of events and will continue to fight in the coming hours, days and months in defence of the fundamental principles of ethics, fair competition, and the interests of football as a whole."

I resigned as U.S. Ambassador Ukraine when Trump kept siding with Putin over our democratic partner. Now, my successor is doing the same.
I knew I had to speak out and run for office because siding with dictators is just not who we are.
Scoop: Julie Davis, the acting US Ambassador in Kyiv, is leaving the State Department having grown frustrated with Trump's dwindling support for Ukraine. Davis's resignation follows that of her predecessor, Bridget Brink, who resigned for similar reasons early last year.
