Toyota expects to generate about $1.7 billion a year by selling its cleaner next-generation engines and hybrid systems to other manufacturers, as the world’s biggest automaker seeks greater scale advantage by leaning on partners.
Toyota Motor Corp. projects getting €500 million ($561.8 million) in outside orders for its powertrains in 2026 with orders climbing to around €1.5 billion ($1.7 billion) in 2032.
The new revenue stream will draw from sales of new powertrains Toyota previewed in 2024 that are expected to come to market as early as 2027. The powertrains could land in future vehicles from Subaru, Mazda, Suzuki or other partners.
The lineup includes a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine and a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine. Both power plants are downsized to be more compact, efficient and powerful than their predecessors, and they can be mated to standard and plug-in hybrid systems.
