A leading cause of deforestation: high meat demand.
A leading cause of wildlife loss: high meat demand.
A leading cause of ocean dead zones: high meat demand.
A leading cause of animal cruelty: high meat demand.
It’s almost as if we should adopt better ways to make protein.

Why does the mainstream media so often scrutinize #PlantBased meat while giving conventional meat a pass? And why does it routinely ignore the animals who stand to benefit from plant-based alternatives? A recent article in the @Independent illustrates both problems.
@ijkeane @bestyrich @Geordie_Greig - media bias or oversight?

Some great news for factory-farmed pigs last night.
In Iowa and Kansas, voters rejected the lead sponsors of the Save Our Bacon Act in both the House and Senate: Rep. Ashley Hinson and Sen. Roger Marshall.
These were the politicians who did the pork lobby’s bidding and tried to wipe out every state ban on selling pork from crated pigs.
Yet even in two of the most pro-agriculture states in the country, it cost them more votes than it won them.
The politicians who follow the factory farming lobby aren’t as safe as they thought.

BREAKING: Right now, dozens of terrified Canadian horses are being flown from Winnipeg to Japan in tiny wooden crates without food or water 💔🐴
Those who survive the gruelling journey will be fattened & killed for meat.
Tell the Canadian government to keep its promise & BAN this cruelty now! ➡️ bit.ly/4iV4aI1

What (or who) is YOUR reason for being vegan? 🐮🌏🐓 In honor of World Vegan Day, let's come together and share what inspires us in the comments!
#WorldVeganDay
Rest in peace, my friend Howard Lyman. Howard was by far the most popular and most frequent public speaker on vegan topics for two decades. Even though I was nearly 30 years younger, I could never have maintained anything like his speaking schedule—which included driving himself from city to city using paper maps and sleeping in activists' guestrooms night after night for months on end.
Howard did more than almost anyone to bring veganism into the mainstream, and he was one of the kindest and hardest-working people I've ever encountered. Excellent obituary here: animals24-7.org/2026/10/29/m…

Jose Andres says we can’t ban foie gras because we need to solve ICE, global hunger, and ‘so many other issues’ before we can worry about animals.
It reminds me of when I collected signatures in Chicago to preserve the city’s foie gras ban.
In wealthy parts of town, high-minded liberals would chide me: 'You’re collecting signatures for ducks? People are getting shot in this city. You should be ashamed.’
When I went to the poor parts of town — the places where people were actually getting shot — no one said that.
Instead, when I explained how foie gras was made, the near-uniform reaction was: ‘They do that to a bird just so some rich asshole can eat foie gras? That’s f’d up.’ Almost everyone signed.
For political elites, banning animal cruelty is a distraction from the Big Serious issues they’re focused on.
For most people, it’s just common sense.
What backslash Jessica? 🧐😇So we are banning all meats? If Duck goes all goes next? …I’ve been through this in California…..just lets concentrate on things that matter…..cars with children are being shot by ICE, immigrants working in farms and restaurants being deported many with green cards and even citizens…so many other issues! Yes let’s bring the ducks now….one more issue for restaurants to handle!😅🕊️
Vegan restaurant owners don't get nearly enough respect and admiration. For so many of them, they are putting all their time into a business with brutal margins and a high rate of failure in order to make vegan food more accessible. I don't think most people with normal jobs appreciate just how tough it is to survive in the restaurant business, particularly the *vegan* restaurant biz. If you can afford it, you can make a big difference by eating at these places more often!

How I'd summarize what these places mean to me 🥲

ALT screenshotted text: The animal rights movement has two very different emotional registers: the grief and terror of looking squarely at factory farming, and the joy of discovering how much creativity, abundance, and pleasure can exist outside it. All-vegan restaurants represent perhaps the fullest embodiment of that second feeling — like “a little heaven,” as Krupa Panchal, co-owner of Bombay Food Junkies, a vegan Indian spot in suburban St. Louis, put it to me.

I just finished an advance copy of @casssunstein's "Animals Matter," about animal rights, and it's excellent. I particularly admire his effort to craft a practical bill of rights for animals. Germany has amended its constitution to protect animals, so who's next?

Have you ever noticed we live in a country where a 95-year-old man can walk into a mud pit in Chicago, call his band The Fuckers, and start reciting “Enter Sandman” like he’s giving a TED Talk from the afterlife?
William Shatner. Ninety-five. Riot Fest. Douglass Park. Thirty-five minutes. Spoken-word heavy metal. In the mud. With people cheering like this is normal.
It is not normal. It is magnificent.
He did “Crazy Train.” He did “Ace of Spades.” He did Metallica. Not sang them. Talked them. Like Captain Kirk got trapped in a guitar amp and decided to negotiate with Satan instead of the Klingons.
Behind him: actual musicians. Marcus Nand. Phil Soussan. Grown men who have paid rent with real notes while a nonagenarian stands there going, “What the F is heavy metal?” and somehow makes it a question worth answering.
Brian May is on the record. Tony Iommi is on the record. The album is called *What the F Is Heavy Metal?* which is the most honest title in music since someone first admitted most of it is just louder complaining.
The crowd ate it up. Of course they did. We will watch a man old enough to remember radio as furniture stand in wet dirt and dare death to tap him on the shoulder. Death probably took one look, said “I’m not dealing with this today,” and went to find someone easier.
You’re never too old to live out your dreams. That’s the line they always use. The real line is: most people quit the second it gets embarrassing. Shatner waited until embarrassing became the whole act, then sold tickets.
Follow @wickedsmaahht before the rest of the timeline figures it out.

The @washingtonpost examines how Trump’s beef policies affect ranchers, consumers and voters. Ranchers have livelihoods. Consumers have grocery bills. And politicians have electoral considerations. The only stakeholder whose problems are left out of the story are the cows, whose abuse and death make this industry possible.
@anniegowen @murraymatt @SpiegelPeter - In your future #washingtonpost coverage about the beef industry, please tell readers what happens to the cows (and the planet) so that they can make informed decisions about what - or who - they eat.
