BREAKING: A review for Gears of War: E-Day recently went live on The Guardian's website, but it was removed shortly thereafter for breaking embargo. The reviewer gave the game a 3/5, saying that "an alien invasion shouldn't be this boring." Though the reviewer believes that the combat in this game is the best the Gears of War series has ever had, they argue that everything else surrounding the gameplay (in the campaign, at least) is disappointing. The reviewer highlighted a number of issues, such as: - ludonarrative dissonance caused by excessive collectibles, which players will get an audio chime for whenever they get close to one - Audio chimes sometimes playing during important, emotional cutscenes - Too many large, open areas instead of fully linear levels like the early Gears games - A lot of repetition in the levels; in some parts of the campaign, players will have to revisit certain locations that they have already gone through - Not enough gameplay variety, aside from missions that involve a helicopter gunning section and a slow-walking stretch during which characters talk to you - Stepping outside the mission objective area triggers a mission failure, which seems at odds with how the game wants you to explore its environments - Side objectives are mainly just short horde missions, in which players have to defend a place from enemies It's important to note that this review doesn't represent the sentiment of all reviewers, and it's possible that this reviewer's opinion may be an outlier.
