AI didn’t kill SEO. It exposed every page that copied the SERP and added nothing new for readers.

Google drew a clear line around AI search optimization: it’s SEO. On May 15, 2026, Google published its official guide, “Optimizing your website for generative AI features on Google Search.” John Mueller announced the release on the Google Search Central Blog, and Google added a new “Generative AI fundamentals” section to Search Central documentation. The biggest takeaway: if your content doesn’t meet the quality and technical standards needed to rank in traditional search, it won’t win visibility in AI-generated answers either. Google also shut down several popular GEO tactics. According to the guide, SEOs can ignore llms.txt files, AI-only rewrites, content “chunking,” and special Markdown or schema implementations built solely for generative AI visibility. The broader message is even bigger: Google frames AEO and GEO as extensions of SEO – not separate disciplines with separate playbooks. AI visibility runs on the same foundations: strong technical SEO, authoritative content, and clear site structure. Learn more: social.semrush.com/4x1Rios.

Google has introduced Open Knowledge Format (OKF), a new open specification designed to standardize the way content is packaged and shared with AI agents. The signal is bigger than the spec itself. As AI systems move from finding information to using it, visibility depends on more than publishing content. It depends on how knowledge is organized, structured, and understood. For marketers, that raises the stakes: • Structured information matters. • Machine-readable knowledge matters. • Information architecture matters. The brands that organize their knowledge best could become the brands AI systems retrieve, cite, and trust first. social.semrush.com/4fNAxXG.

Most SEO pros that use AI content (72%) say they think AI-assisted content performs just as well or better than human-written content in search rankings – that’s up from 64% in our 2024 study. But it’s not one-sided: 📈 13% now say it performs worse (vs. 9% last year) 📉 “Not sure / haven’t compared” dropped from 27% to 15% This shows how opinions are moving in both directions. After having some time to experiment and use AI in their workflows, more teams now have a definitive opinion on how they think AI content performs. social.semrush.com/4vdfXV2.

The brands AI recommends aren't the ones with the most keywords. They're the ones with the most authority. You can do that by building a company podcast with @RiversidedotFM I've scaled companies through SEO and content for 16 years. I've watched search change completely in the last two.

Marketing should be accountable just like every other department. Not just when it comes to producing a positive ROI, but also by putting a fork in the road so you can set goals and forecast. But when forecasting, combine your channels, such as paid and SEO, to improve accuracy.

The marketing funnel still explains customer behavior. Awareness → consideration → decision. But it doesn’t work in order anymore. People loop, compare, and come back again before they convert. social.semrush.com/4xDbNZj.

Content hubs go beyond SEO structure. They structure content so search engines and AI systems understand your expertise as a connected topic map – not isolated pages competing on their own. Done right, they strengthen crawlability, deepen context, and sharpen topical authority across your entire domain. social.semrush.com/4oDXyiv.
