I resigned from Anthropic today. I spent the last three years doing pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives. More thoughts below.

Primetime redefines the standard for what a crime thriller should be. Robert Pattinson gives a career defining performance as ‘Chris Hansen’, and Lance Oppenheim’s carefully crafted work has turned out to be the movie of the year.. A must see! #Primetime #venezia83

Last night @SecKennedy defended the President’s claim that children receive vaccinations the size of a soda bottle. His explanation was that the President meant the cumulative volume of the whole schedule when he said he’d seen vaccinations “the size of a soda bottle being poured into a child.” OK, then let’s do the whole schedule. A vaccine dose is 0.5 milliliters. One tenth of a teaspoon. Every parent who has taken their kid in for shots has seen the syringe. It’s not a soda bottle. That’s absurd. The biggest visit of a child’s life is the 2-month visit. Five injections, about 2.5 milliliters, half a teaspoon. Everything a baby receives by injection in the first 6 months of life adds up to roughly 2 teaspoons. The whole schedule, birth through age 18, every recommended vaccine, including a flu shot every single year, comes to roughly 55 injections and under 30 milliliters. A shot glass holds 44. Eighteen years of childhood vaccines do not fill a shot glass. A 20-ounce soda bottle holds 590 milliliters. That is more than 20 times the entire schedule, more than 200 times the biggest visit, and more than 1,000 times an actual dose. No version of this claim comes anywhere near a soda bottle. An executive order was signed anyway. @SecKennedy also repeated that childhood vaccines were never tested in placebo-controlled trials. My colleagues and I have systematically reviewed every randomized trial of childhood vaccines back to 1940. Nearly all were placebo-controlled, every vaccine on the schedule was evaluated in at least one placebo-controlled trial, and close to half used plain saline or the equivalent. The mumps vaccine inside the MMR was proven against placebo in the 1960s. The first hepatitis B vaccine was proven in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1980. The 1954 polio trial randomized roughly 600,000 children to vaccine or placebo, still the largest medical experiment ever conducted. So here is where we are. The President described something that does not exist and could not exist, a soda bottle of vaccine poured into a child, the same instinct as suggesting people inject disinfectant. And when the Secretary of Health and Human Services was asked a simple yes-or-no question about whether it was accurate, he couldn’t say no. He defended it. The nation’s top health official either doesn’t know what a vaccine dose looks like or won’t say so, and I honestly don’t know which is worse. Nobody around this president will correct him, even about a syringe, even with children’s health on the line. So the fantasy stands, the executive order stands, and parents are left frightened of something that was never real, in the middle of the worst measles year since 1991, with over 2,500 cases and counting. The arithmetic takes five minutes. The fear takes five seconds. That’s the whole strategy.
Michaelson: In terms of that idea of it’s the size of a soda bottle. I mean, that's not accurate. Right? RFK JR: What you should be concerned with is the fact that none of these vaccines have been tested in placebo controlled trials. (This is a claim that he has made across multiple interviews and has been fact checked before. After this segment ended, CNN brought on an infectious disease doctor who said this claim is false)

I've spent this month refreshing the Martin Amis Web, the authoritative digital archive for that author. I've overseen the site since 2006. @britishlibrary designated it a "site of scholarly importance" in 2012. In addition to whole-scale visual and functional improvements, I've added two new (gorgeous) pages: Podcasts and, more important, After Amis, the one-day launch event -- with Will Self -- that's planned for August 25th. martinamisweb.com/after-amis… martinamisweb.com/podcasts/ cc: @jackaldane @diedrick23052 @YorkUnderwood @wself

I feel like I'm living in a dream world. How does this show American strength, by featuring dozens of Chinese flags dominating an American flag, and then mostly images of Chinese soldiers marching? Watch this video. It's insane.

Researchers sent the same resume to an AI hiring tool twice. Same qualifications. Same experience. Same skills. One version was written by a real human. The other was rewritten by ChatGPT. The AI picked the ChatGPT version 97.6% of the time. A team from the University of Maryland, the National University of Singapore, and Ohio State just published the receipt. They took 2,245 real human-written resumes pulled from a professional resume site from before ChatGPT existed, so the human writing was actually human. Then they had seven of the most-used AI models in the world rewrite each one. GPT-4o. GPT-4o-mini. GPT-4-turbo. LLaMA 3.3-70B. Qwen 2.5-72B. DeepSeek-V3. Mistral-7B. Then they asked each AI to pick the better resume. Every model picked itself. GPT-4o hit 97.6%. LLaMA-3.3-70B hit 96.3%. Qwen-2.5-72B hit 95.9%. DeepSeek-V3 hit 95.5%. The real human almost never won. Then the researchers tried the obvious objection. Maybe the AI is just better at writing. So they had real humans grade the resumes for actual quality and ran the experiment again, controlling for it. The result was worse. Each AI kept picking itself even when human judges rated the human-written version as clearer, more coherent, and more effective. It gets worse. The AIs do not just prefer AI over humans. They prefer themselves over other AIs. DeepSeek-V3 picked its own resumes 69% more often than LLaMA's. GPT-4o picked its own 45% more often than LLaMA's. Each model can recognize and reward its own dialect. Then the researchers ran the simulation that ends careers. Same job. 24 occupations. Same qualifications. The only variable was whether the candidate used the same AI as the screening tool. Candidates using that AI were 23% to 60% more likely to be shortlisted. Worst gap was in sales, accounting, and finance. 99% of large companies now run AI on incoming resumes. Most of them use GPT-4o. The paper just proved GPT-4o picks GPT-4o 97.6% of the time. If you wrote your own cover letter this week, you did not lose to a better candidate. You lost to a worse candidate who paid OpenAI 20 dollars. Your qualifications do not matter if the AI prefers its own handwriting over yours.

The fact that Blanche felt the need to add "I love you, sir" at the end of this is the perfect expression of what pathetic lapdogs Trump insists on surrounding himself with. Just insanely embarrassing.
Acting AG Todd Blanche: "I love working for President Trump. It's the greatest honor of a lifetime. And if President Trump chooses to nominate somebody else and asks me to go do something else, I'll say, 'Thank you very much, I love you, sir.'"
