Looks like we’re in for a splash in these parts if the old saying is anything to go by. Is it the same picture across the UK? #NaturesCalendar #CitizenScience Oak before Ash, in for a splash. Ash before Oak, in for a soak.

It's easy to forget oak trees are flowering plants too: these are the catkins (male pollen-producing flowers) of sessile oak, which mostly lives in rougher, more rocky parts of the country. In deeper, more fertile soils, pedunculate oak is more common; both are native species.

The very first flowers of the Hawthorn are opening! Like yesterday's cow parsley, the May is a flower associated with very inauspicious events when brought indoors.

First Swifts of the year 🙂. Two over Bluntisham, Cambs. Wasn't expecting them this early in a cold Spring, on a grey, rainy day! My earliest ever is 4 May. Recorded in @BirdTrack and @WoodlandTrust Nature's Calendar. @TheSwiftLady1 @simon_gillings @Natures_Voice @WT_JGarforth
