Hello designers 👋🏾
We’ve built something to help more talented creatives get discovered!
OpenPitch is a human-vetted creative index built around fairer visibility. Applications are reviewed on creative quality and thinking, rather than team size.
Once a profile reaches its organic click allowance, it rotates out of general discovery for the rest of its cycle, giving other creatives more room to be seen.
People can also search using reference brands like Nike, Aesop or Google to find creatives with a relevant style, approach or expertise.
You can apply to join for free using the link below 👇🏾

A great use of tech in branding 🤌🏾
Built a little pattern engine for the Calendly rebrand with @Smith_Diction.
It got me thinking about what tools are actually good for in branding.
i just listed wwwonder.group on outliked, the leaderboard where you participate by posting and win based on likes.
every like on this tweet pushes it closer to #1.

Not entirely sure how it will work in reality, but I think this is a great idea. It's amazing the difference in impact is when you read words in print vs when you read digitally.
Plus is it's a good way of quite literally BOOKmarking your most important content 📚

You can now self-publish generative works on Verse FYI! And collectors can buy with no wallet and no crypto.
Hit 'Create' in the main navigation on Desktop.

This visual identity update for @Calendly is 🎯 It has a lovely balance between being digitally clean and yet feeling organic 🤌🏾
🗓️ NEW WORK FOR @Calendly 🗓️
Back when we first started S&D one of the most needless hassles that drove me crazy was the email tennis of scheduling a meeting. A few years ago, we started using Calendly, and it was infinitely better. So when they asked us to work on their brand it felt like karma.
It's so rare that you get to work on an identity for something that actually changed your business. So we knew we had to do it right.

AI is a great tool, but it's not ready to replace the artist yet - if ever 👀 They heart of artistry is "feel" and how can you truly capture that?
The other side is resonance with the intended audience, which isn't entirely logical.
In the same way that beautiful art isn't necessarily the most expertly painted, or popular logos the most rationally designed, there is a depth to design that I don't think we truly understand yet 💭
I hate to say it but I have to say the thing.
Talk like this shows how much closer to the bubble bursting we are for AI and especially AI design tools.
The most damning part of this is that most if not all of the major AI companies don’t use their own tools for their marketing materials because people can spot AI generated work from a mile away.
Your end users, customers, and audiences aren’t machines and AI, it’s people.
Which is something we are forgetting.
I use AI everyday but I never let it touch creative because I know 1) people will reject it, 2) it’ll only ever be average because that’s all AI can do and 3) there’s no creativity happening here which means no joy or passion.
The designers who push and celebrate these tools are only reflections of what they used to be in terms of creatives.
It’s sad and disheartening.
And for those of you saying it’s the future get used to it, you never understood creativity or human nature to begin with.
I said the thing.

I've seen a lot of thoughts going both ways about the new Instagram logo type, but my general take is that if it needs explanation for someone to like it, then it's already failed.
Your subconscious has already made a decision on the brand, and people are essentially trying to reverse that decision using logic.
The best brands make you feel before you even have time to think 🧠

A very interesting take, and I have to say, to a large extent, I agree!
As the playing field becomes more level across almost every sector, one of the few remaining differentiators capable of changing a company’s trajectory is its brand.
Look at the mobile phone sector. The form factors and hardware are much the same across brands, while software and apps are increasingly platform-agnostic. So what companies do with their brand design is becoming the real point of difference.
It’s the same with computers and gaming, which is increasingly becoming a brand war rather than one fought purely on hardware/software performance.
And in a sector I’ve spent a lot of time working in - skincare - it’s even more noticeable. Sometimes, the only differences between formulations are the fragrance or texture of the creams. Brand becomes the key differentiator, hence the slew of influencers and celebrities launching skincare brands to great success.
Recently when writing my @BritishGQ skincare column, I’m finding it harder and harder to identify meaningful points of difference between brands. Formulation knowledge is now fairly ubiquitous, as is access to ingredients.
Fashion saw this coming early, with moves such as appointing Pharrell at Louis Vuitton, Ye at Gap and, more recently, Jaden Smith at Christian Louboutin - a trend that's set to continue.
One thing’s for sure: top Brand Strategists and CBOs are only going to become more sought-after... it’s about time.
My hottest take is that brand marketing is going to be THE major differentiator and one of the most prized assets for a company going forward.
And, I’m not talking about launch videos or pouring money primarily for “aesthetics” simply to pump the valuation. You still need retention before attention.
I’m talking about thinking through what a company stands for and understanding the “vibe” of what’s happening in the market. Being relentless on the long term goal while also thinking through how to showcase the company in the short term. And doing it every week.
Especially if you think agents become the primary user for most products, then to get the attention of a rapidly attention deficit audience (aka humans) you’ll need to stand out consistently in how you present the company.
These folks primary have been given tier 2 roles and passed up for CMOs many many times. I think this will finally invert in the next 10 years where you’ll hire these folks as cofounders or at least give them a big seat at the table.
Normally the design centric CEO tends to be this, but those are rare and you’ll need to learn how to hire for this role. Just like a good product marketer, these are exceptionally rare so you have one hold them close!!
