Linnaeus attempted the classification of the entire natural world in Systema Naturæ, describing the animal, plant and mineral kingdoms. A few Linnaeus Link partners own the first edition (1735) bit.ly/3gfUiX2. Image from the @LinneanSociety copy #CollectionsUnited

Linnaeus’s apostles travelled to promote his system. Daniel Solander worked at the BM before joining Joseph Banks on Cook’s first Pacific voyage. Jonas Dryander, another apostle, succeeded him as Banks’s librarian. Dryander gifted Banks this book bit.ly/3ge4eQZ

A curious story… we don’t know how but a page from our Egerton MS 2037 of autobiographical notes by Linnaeus ended up @LinneanSociety, but at least it’s digitised! bit.ly/2WVtcNa This page describes a young Linnaeus struggling to afford the essentials #CollectionsUnited

The Michel Adanson Library @CarnegieMellon Hunt Institute holds a copy of Species Plantarum (L.) given and inscribed by Linnaeus to Bernard de Jussieu, who later gave it to his student Michel Adanson. Andanson seemed to find more errors on this page than Linnaeus did (R.)!

Linnaeus' son (also Carl!) is often overlooked. He helped Banks & Solander sort the Endeavour voyage specimens in 1781-2. Solander's paper slips @NHM_Library (L.) and Linn fil's are among the first index cards, on the same paper & in exactly the same format. #collectionsunited

#collectionsunited highlights the networks & exchange of specimens and info that increased botanical knowledge. @TheBotanics Roupell's ill of Spigelia marylandica (L.) spurred J. Hope to send a spec to Linnaeus who had misidentified it. Linnaeus corrected the error in 1764 Sp. Pl

Our conservator is enjoying cleaning and repairing volumes of our founder J.E. Smith's Opuscula collection (bound offprints): today she showed us (via video link!) this beautiful engraving of a thistle (genus Carlina) from B. Hacquet's 'Plantae Alpinae Carniolicae' (Vienna, 1782)

The Linnean Society library may be closed, but there's plenty of material online to keep us occupied. Our Collections team have put together a list of open access resources for everyone in the biological sciences community. Do send us your suggestions! linnean.org/research-collect…
