When looking strictly at the words Allah chose, the inhabitants of Hell are crying out to the "Keeper/Master" based on his visible function and authority over them, which matches exactly how Allah describes the guardians of Hell throughout the rest of the Quran.
“My heart trembled when I learned that the people of Hell, after a long torment whose duration we do not know, ask for four wishes.
The Qur’an describes them in four scenes:
#The_First_Wish:
(‘Our Lord, bring us out of it, and if we ever return [to sin], then indeed we would be wrongdoers.’)
They wish to leave the Fire, but Allah replies:
(‘Remain despised therein and do not speak to Me.’)
After that, they lose hope and realize there will be no escape from it.
#The_Second_Wish:
They ask it from Malik, the keeper of Hell:
(‘And they will call, “O Malik, let your Lord put an end to us!”’)
They wish to die just to find relief from the torment, but Malik replies:
(‘Indeed, you will remain.’)
Then they turn to—
#The_Third_Wish:
—to the guardians of Hell (the angels), asking for a wish so heartbreaking it makes the body shiver. What is that wish?
(‘And those in the Fire will say to the keepers of Hell, “Supplicate your Lord to lighten for us a day from the punishment.”’)
Allah… they only wish to rest for one day, just one day.
But the angels answer them:
(‘Did there not come to you your messengers with clear proofs?’)
(‘They will say: Yes.’)
(The angels will say: ‘Then supplicate yourselves, but the supplication of the disbelievers is not except in error.’)
Meaning: your prayers will not be answered.
#Then_Comes_The_Fourth_Wish:
And from whom do they ask it? From the people of Paradise.
What a simple wish it is:
(‘And the companions of the Fire will call to the companions of Paradise: “Pour upon us some water…”’)
Or what else?
(‘…or from whatever Allah has provided you.’)
But they will reply:
(‘Indeed, Allah has forbidden them both to the disbelievers.’)
Why? What were they doing?
(‘Those who took their religion as amusement and play…’)
And what else?
(‘…and whom the worldly life deluded.’)
So what is their recompense?
(‘So today We will forget them just as they forgot the meeting of this Day of theirs…’)”

UK and Nigeria Seal £746 Million ($990 Million) Export Finance Deal to Modernise Major Ports
Nigeria's maritime infrastructure, the United Kingdom and Nigeria have agreed on a £746 million (approximately $990 million) export finance package to fund the comprehensive refurbishment and modernisation of two of Nigeria's busiest seaports.
The landmark deal, backed by UK Export Finance (UKEF), will support the upgrade of the Lagos Port Complex (Apapa) and the Tin Can Island Port Complex in Lagos. These facilities handle over 70% of Nigeria's imports and exports, making them critical gateways for the country's trade.
The financing, coordinated and arranged by Citibank with UKEF's guarantee, is described as the most ambitious port modernisation effort in Nigeria in nearly 50 years. It aims to introduce advanced cargo-handling systems, digitalisation, automation, and other improvements to reduce congestion, speed up operations, and align the ports with international best practices.
The agreement was announced on March 19, 2026, during Nigerian President Bola Tinubu's state visit to the UK, where he met with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in London. The formal signing took place amid the visit on March 18-19, 2026.
The deal is expected to generate substantial opportunities for British businesses, including an estimated £236 million in supplier contracts for UK firms. Notably, it includes a £70 million contract for British Steel, which the UK government highlighted as a major support for the domestic steel industry coming on the same day as announcements of new strategies to protect and bolster Britain's steel sector.
This partnership also aligns with record-high bilateral trade between the UK and Nigeria, recently reaching £8.1 billion annually, supported by initiatives like the UK-Nigeria Enhanced Trade and Investment Partnership (ETIP).
The project is anticipated to enhance Nigeria's competitiveness as a maritime hub in West and Central Africa, ease trade bottlenecks, and drive economic growth.
