Thirty-three years ago, and still we’re only barely listening.
This 1990 speech from Carl Sagan about the military budget and the scientific consensus on global warming is still relevant today

A stationary low pressure system sending smoke from Canadian wildfires into our nation's capital and largest media markets, where it cannot be ignored, might just be the surest sign of Divine intervention on a global scale that we've seen in quite some time.

Nicely put, Graham. I read through all those quotes and found a lot about winning, but nothing regarding generosity.
Lesson: do not idolize the mega rich for their wealth could have been the health care, transportation, and schools you’ve been needing for a comfortable life.

Wherein the key common theme is "lack of preparation"...
We called four people and said: tell me an anecdote of your war — the war in Iraq as you lived it. This answers recorded by @gordemer are overpowering. Humans telling their stories. Set aside seven minutes and listen. @MorningEdition @NPR npr.org/2023/03/20/116464171…

Fascinating bit of not-so-trivial trivia. Further thought: Are we “feeding the world” or enslaving the world with grain exports?
In 1972 historian Al Crosby speculated that introducing corn to Africa so reduced hunger that pop'n density rose, which in turn “enabled the slave trade to go on as long as it did.” TIL that 2 economists examined the evidence for this in 2019 and... Yep. sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

I am partial to Eddie Vedder's work on Into the Wild. Amazing lyrics that add much to the narrative of the film!

Just voted. Came away with an uneasy feeling for two reasons: 1) The only black person in line was also, so far as I could see, the only person asked to show ID; 2) Ballots were entered into the machine face-up, with plenty of help from election worker who glanced at my choices.

I mean, there are such simple and straightforward ways to put people at ease with the voting process that are routinely ignored...

In 1861, Lincoln spoke in my home state and tried to reassure people upset by his election.
This "simple idea" literally changed my life a couple years ago. The change could not have been more dramatic, and came in the nick of time before some significant life stressors that would've been much worse without it.
This simple idea--that eating less fat and more carbs leads to higher insulin, which leads to greater fat production from the liver--is so often overlooked or misunderstood. This explains why blood lipids can get so much worse despite eating less fat. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/3634…
