This is the Changan Deepal S07. It is a fully electric mid-size SUV that promises 500km on a single charge. It’s quite expensive, coming in from R995 900. I’ve had it for a few days and it’s quite a treat, with my real-world range coming in at 460km. It’s very comfortable and packed with German OEM level finishes inside. It only supports up to 92kW charging rate, which is disappointing when I have 150kW public chargers around me. Charging it from 10% to 80% at a public charger takes roughly 45 minutes at R411.60. At home, the same charge costs R196 BUT takes overnight. It’s very hard for me to justify that price tag though.

I finally got to drive the new Haval H7 this past weekend. For starters, I’m glad GWM chose this boxy design because the old one wasn’t make sure. For my drive I stuck to the PHEV Ultra Luxury 4x4 (R794 900) with an electric range of up to 115km and powered by 1.5l turbocharged engine (280kw/670Nm) too. Acceleration is snappy off the line and smooth but steering has that unrefined feel. We took it on a section of gravel, it’s capable but it does feel rather road-biased. The cabin is well insulated and comfortable. Ride feels confidently high. The tech inside is welcomed and infotainment screen is insanely massive. Compared to the T2, I would go for this. This just feels better put together.
