Not at all surprising.
In my five years as Immigration Minister, we consistently found that all of our challenging reforms* were supported by immigrants more than people born in Canada.
* Reforms like:
- Eliminating a backlog of 700,000 PR applications
- raising the bar for selection under the points grid, including for English / French language proficiency
- overhauling the asylum system that reduced new claims by 80%
- imposing visas on major source countries for asylum claims;
- imposing a waiting period before foreign sponsored spouses could obtain PR to crack down on marriage fraud
- raising the bar to obtain citizenship with much more robust language and knowledge tests based on our Discover Canada citizenship guide, and adding a year to the residency requirement;
- revoking citizenship from thousands of people who had obtained it fraudulently;
- stopping applications for the parents & grandparents sponsorship program;
- ending the live in caregiver program;
- ending the widely abused Investor Immigrant Program;
- overhauling the Temporary Foreign Worker Program that reduced intake of low skilled TFWs by 85%;
- removing federal health benefits from rejected asylum claimants;
- increasing resources for CBSA to increase & accelerate deportations, etc..
- reforming the Multiculturalism Program to focus on integration & civic literacy rather than divisive critical race theory;
Many of these reforms elicited the usual charges of racism from the left, and many were opposed by the business community as being too restrictive. But consistently we saw super majority support amongst new Canadians for these and other tough measures.
We have lost our mind
I love this country, but there is something that is so much more wrong than anything else that is wrong.
This week you will have heard two stories.
A 61 year old indigenous man (and that part is not irrelevant) convicted of raping and murdering a young woman and raping and beating a second woman, leaving her for dead, and rendering her quadriplegic, after serving his sentence, and still on parole (which he violated), was admitted to @mcgillu faculty of law, studying on campus amongst many young female students.
Separately, two young men broke into the wrong apartment and instead of killing whoever they were there to kill, they beat an 86 year old man nearly to death and burnt his face with a blow torch. His injuries were so severe that he could never recover and was able to have his life ended under our MAID protocol. The two attempted murderers were sentenced to 7 and 8 years in prison.
Have we lost our minds???
Replying to @SPSTremblay

« Pierre Trudeau pointed out »
😂😂🤦♂️🤦♂️
Exactly. When Quebec politicians ignore the Constitution, they are in Trump-imitation mode. And don't waste your time with debagting arguments that Quebec never signed the 1982 Constitution. As Pierre Trudeau pointed out at the time, it wasn't necessary for Quebec to sign that for it to be binding upon Quebec. In addition, Quebec governments avail themslves of the Constitution when they feel like it, such as use of the notwithstanding clause. Quebec is in. And that, and the rule of law, is what swearing an oath to the King, is about.
