“It's not knowing yourself biographically or being aware of your thoughts. No, it's knowing yourself according to metaphysics.”
That's Proclus' reading of the Delphic “Know thyself” in this week's class. What would it take to know yourself that way?

What kind of will does a god have, if it never deliberates and can never fail? Proclus: the gods don't choose — they ARE values, and just by being themselves they draw all things toward the good. And in us, that same wanting runs deeper than the mind.
kabbalistically the story is like this. souls only ever descend to this world by an act of physical zivug, but since there are many more such acts than children born, these souls have no bodies to inhabit, and so they roam around looking for quasi-bodies.
in the past there was a balance to this. an infertile couple making love would have the soul lent to an ivf baby to for example. but the more people started having
casual zivug people the supply of souls has outpaced the available human bodies.

When the cosmic causes all agree, you're powerless. But they usually disagree — and then your choiceis the casting vote that tips the balance. How oracles and theurgy shore up human freedom in Proclus.
Also in this: the dignity of the self-reflective soul.
so Claude is smarter than Google because Google reads the web but Claude reads books. It's that basic.

Every action has three causes, Proclus says: the God who makes it good, the cosmos that makes it happen, and you — who make it yours. It is formally fated, but empirically free.

friends, i have built a bit of a cognitive nuclear bomb: an LLM- enhanced gematria calculator that not only finds meaningful connections for any word you enter but can also bridge almost any two words together using one of 12 gematrai cyphers: gematria.hormeze.com

anyway there are and will be new rebbes, whether some group or the other recognizes them now or later. just like a messiah exists and will probably come no matter if your system allows or doesn't allow for it.
the sad thing isn't if there is a successor or not, the sad thing is how yidden split into groups where what is like yesodos hadas to one doesn't even make sense to another, we weren't always like this, we used to be able to have arguments, anyway we got bigger problems now
funny thing is that this is all true, except it's not a 'proof'. as is the seven day week and many other arbitrary things. Why these indeterminate things happen and what controls them is an interesting question for people not looking to play at 'proving' things.

Neoplatonic Virtue: The Two Souls, Mathematics, and Fate | Reading Proclus' On Providence
Can you love God without a body? Proclus says the soul is partly above fate, partly under it. Mathematics is how you begin to find out which part you are.

i'm kinda done with this headline. sorry you don't get to call yourself a 'mystic' if you didn't like at least once starve yourself for a month or deprive urself of sleep for a week in search of transcendence. none of this bourgeois mediocrity claiming all the glory with no work.
