This is why Britain eventually has to confront the obvious.
You cannot solve a structural growth crisis with an endless cycle of tax rises and spending restraint while deliberately keeping barriers between yourself and your largest market.
The OBR still estimates Brexit leaves UK productivity around 4% lower in the long run.
British goods exports have badly underperformed our competitors since the TCA came into force.
So yes, fix planning.
Fix energy.
Invest in infrastructure.
Support industry and farming.
But the biggest structural growth reform sitting in front of Britain is the one Westminster still struggles to say out loud:
š¢ reintegrate with Europe.
Single Market.
Customs Union.
And ultimately, if Britain wants its full influence back, EU membership.
You cannot budget your way around geography.

I find it amazing that the UK, an island off mainland europe, managed to build up car manufacturing to the point where it rivalled Germany in 2016.
That was pretty good going for the UK.
Then the Brexit vote hit and killed it.
The decline of the British car industry came in two Brexit stages.
1. Uncertainty post-referendum weakened the industry
2. Trade arrangements that replaced EU membership did lasting damage.

Former bricklayer here. Most working class people (like most middle-class people) are disgusted by the comments coming from Reform UK figures caught on camera by ITV.
Bigoted privately educated multimillionaire far-right wanker Nigel Farage doesn't give a solitary shit about working class people. Nor does bigoted privately educated multimillionaire far-right wanker Rupert Lowe.
Posh-boy millionaire Nigel Farageās latest excuse is that most working-class men are racist and misogynistic, sniff womenās chairs, would sexually assault female colleagues and make disgusting remarks about their own daughters, such as: āFuck me, if she was my daughter, it would still be bath night on a Thursday. Iāll wash you properly this time.ā
The white working-class friends I grew up with, from primary and secondary school to college and university, are not nonces or bigots.
Farage doesnāt get to smear an entire class of people to excuse the disgusting behaviour of Reform councillors and activists.

We have become so used to functioning markets that we confuse money with security.
I learnt the difference during the tsunami in the Maldives. While we waited to be evacuated, some British tourists had gathered their passports, cigarettes and money.
I had water, food and torch/lifejacket.
In a crisis, the value hierarchy changes very quickly.
The same is true of nations. GDP, trade deals and financial assets matter but if you cannot reliably secure food, energy, water and essential supplies, you are not resilient.
You cannot eat sovereignty. You cannot heat a home with a trade slogan.
Real national security starts with the things people physically need to survive.

A woman has alleged Russell Brand told her āitās just funā as he raped her in a hotel room at the 1999 Labour party conference, a court has heard.
The alleged victim told detectives the comedian made her feel sick and dirty as he assaulted her despite her pleading: āGet off me, please stop. It hurts.ā
Brand faces three charges of rape, three of sexual assault and one of indecent assault against six women, in allegations spanning 10 years from 1999 to 2009. He denies all the charges and has pleaded not guilty.
The 51-year-old fixed his gaze on one of the TV screens at Southwark crown court on Thursday as a video of the womanās interview from 27 September 2023 was played.
She told police she met Brand at a fringe cabaret event that he was performing in during the Labour party conference in Bournemouth in 1999. She was not attracted to the then unknown performer, whom she assumed was gay and showered her with compliments.
But she found him polite and intelligent, and the pair spoke about their work before going back to her hotel room to continue their conversation.
The woman said she āfrozeā in the run-down single room when she returned from the toilet to find that Brand was partly naked and āprancing aroundā like an ostrich. He also asked her to take photographs of him. She said she asked him why he had undressed, and he told her: āDonāt worry, Iām mostly naked at home.ā
She told police he then raped her in an attack that lasted up to 10 minutes and left her feeling frightened, in pain, and like she couldnāt breathe.
āHe did rape, he did push me on the bed,ā she told police. āHe did pull my clothes off, he took my trousers off.
āI remember him on me, very heavy. I know I said no. I kind of drifted out of my head. I couldnāt get out of the situation ā ādo I shout, do I scream?ā He was very heavy, I couldnāt breathe, it didnāt take long.ā
She described his body as snake-like and ādisgustingā and said his tongue was āhorribleā like a lizard.
āIām saying āno, noā but I was really scared. I know he groped me. I know he was touching me, I know he grabbed my breasts. I know he tried to kiss me and I moved my neck. I didnāt want his mouth on mine,ā she told police.
āHe was just pulling my trousers down and pulling my underwear off, and he was inside me. It was not nice, it was painful and it hurt.ā
She said she closed her eyes during the attack and hoped it would be over quickly. She recalled: āHe was making noises, a lot of noises of enjoyment and saying how pretty I was. I remember him complimenting me, saying: āAre you enjoying itā? I remember him asking me. Obviously I didnāt answer.ā
She alleged that Brand spoke as the attack was unfolding. She told police: āHe was just saying: āWeāre having fun, itās fine, itās all good, donāt worry about it, itās just fun, itās normal.āā
The woman, who had been a victim of abuse in the past, said Brand made her compare earlier experiences, and it āstuck in her head ⦠is this what abusers do?ā
She told police: āIt was almost like to convince me itās all OK and that Iād enjoy it, that Iād have to learn to enjoy it.ā
In the aftermath, she said Brand acted ālike nothing was wrongā, wrote down his email address, and suggested that his mother might like to meet her.
The following morning, she banged her head against the wall because she felt numb. She told police she had had nightmares about being pregnant and said she kept quiet about the incident for years as she watched Brand becoming āmore and more famousā.
The woman said a 2023 Dispatches documentary about allegation of sexual misconduct by Brand ātriggeredā her to go to police.
Brand denies the allegations. The trial continues.

Don't give in to @andyburnham's blackmail. History is on the Greens' side on this issue and younger voters will continue to desert a genocide supporting party like Labour, with plenty of MPs who receive funds from the Israel lobby. Fuck them.
ANDY BURNHAM'S ULTIMATUM TO THE GREENS HAS CHANGED EVERYTHING
Green councillors in power-sharing deals with Labour across the country have been given a week to publicly disavow their own partyās āZionism is racismā position, as a row between the parties intensifies. In an ultimatum issued on Thursday (15 October), Labour said it would collapse its power sharing agreements with Greens in more than a dozen local authorities unless the partyās councillors rejected the controversial motion that passed through its party conference on 4 October. The NS understands that Green councillors in power-sharing areas have received letters from their Labour colleagues setting out the consequences of the Prime Ministerās position. Green councillors must publicly reject the āZionism is racismā motion within seven days or power sharing will end.

This is why Andy Burnhams comments yesterday were so deeply irresponsible - blurring all the lines between being Jewish & criticising Israel.

Screw @andyburnham and @UKLabour if he's afraid of wetting his knickers because Israel is offended. No serious, objective and independent politician would say that about a country that's involved in genocide. Fuck him and them.
Andy Burnham rules out any partnership between Labour and the Green Party due to their controversial motion declaring "Zionism is racism".
