The new special feature of @europenowjrnl places the rural at the centre of current debates in European studies. My contribution highlights the global connections of rural Europe in the past. Many thanks to the entire editorial team!
The November issue is here with a feature on rurality. This issue seeks to encourage an engaged representation of rural areas & populations in the study of Europe, interrogating how interdisciplinary rural scholarship can frame key questions about Europe: bit.ly/3plN2xFs

We cherish the scraps of paper hidden between pages, the unanswered messages, and even the lingering pain—each a reminder of those we love, of those lost to this war.
Digging out a reference in my copy of Shevchenko's Kobzar, I found a piece of paper tucked in the back with my intro notes for an event I moderated at London Book Fair in 2023 with Victoria Amelina, @lukeharding1968 & @mykhed_o. Painful to see the present tense verbs in her bio.

We tend to position disabled people in 'cared for' roles in histories of the family, but in 19th century working class households, disabled people were also carers and contributors. My new article for Journal of Modern European History: doi.org/10.1177/161189442412…

just arrived in the post: the new 'Everyday Postsocialism in Eastern Europe', put together by the wonderful Jill Massino and Markus Wien. Tons of great essays - on migrants, women, workers, minorities, kids; and on some weird historians, by yours truly.

Yesterday in Kharkiv, Russians bombed a residential building killing 7, including the 18-yo artist Nika Kozhushko. I remember her well from a literary event in January. Here is the drawing she had with her. It depicted the recently bombed residential building. She was the future.
