I wrote about the Rohingya for @USIP . Of 2.8 million around the world, only 23% still live in Myanmar. Conditions are worst for those in Bangladesh & Myanmar. But comprehensive solutions should also consider the future of the entire community. usip.org/publications/2024/0…

There are Rakhine, Hindus, Maramagris and Dainets in Maungdaw. AA warned people to leave from 14th. Most Rakhines left but many of the other groups stayed. I don’t know why. Most of Maungdaw is AA controlled so areas to flee to.

1588 Children and women of Byaing Pru village are held captive in monasteries as human shields in Sittwe
AB News- June 2, 2024
The residents of Sittwe City said “About one thousand and five hundred eighty-eight children and women are holding captive as human shields in different Buddhist monasteries in Sittwe city.
Following the incident held on 30 May and 31 May of killing more than 40 people aged above from 15 years to 70 years old whose were disappeared through burning to ashes by the terrorist military council, the rest people of Byaing Pru village including children and women are in captive as a human shield although, there is no tense of battle or war in the city.
The number of Children and women in captivity:
1. Maniradana Buddhist monastery 400
2. Sangha Radana Buddhist monastery 300
3. Eain Soe May Mi Buddhist monastery 150
4. Yetra Buddhist monastery 140
5. Seik Kay Buddhist monastery 120
6. Dhamma Raittha Buddhist monastery 428
7. VibizzaVadi Buddhist monastery 50.
An analytic of warfare on condition of anonymity said to this reporter that if the war breaks out with the Arakan army in the city, as a Part of pre-preparation Tatmadaw, the terrorist military council has kept the general civilians captivity in the Buddhist monasteries as a human shield. It is found that the military council has prepared Sittwe City as an ultimate stronghold by applying different strategies. For AA, after capturing Maungdaw, the very last destination is Sittwe. The analytic added.
"By occurring mass killing at Byaing Pru Village in Sittwe the terrorist military council wanted to send a message to the people that they would have died if the AA proceeded toward the city. A similar strategy was applied in Pauktaw Township by the terrorist gang. There is an example that during the battle in Buthidaung Muslim people were used as human shields", said the analytic of warfare.
The children and women captivated from Byaing Pru village are kept in the different Buddhist monasteries in Sittwe City without letting them go out is also the strategy of using them as human shields.
After leaking out the news of 3 women being taken by a military vehicles and killing 2 women after being raped, the pictures of the two women's dead bodies went viral on social media.
